Job InformationOpen to the general public and any current Municipal employee. If the person selected is not affiliated with the Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA), he or she must become a member in good standing within 31 days of beginning work.Hours of Work: Monday - Friday; 8am - 5pmExample of DutiesInvestigate complaints regarding Anchorage Municipal Code Title 21 land use code violations through the application of various municipal codes to determine if violations exist. Initiate enforcement actions to correct violations through negotiated compliance and/or administrative actions. Prepare and present enforcement cases and defend appeals before various administrative and quasi-judicial bodies such as the Administrative Hearings Officer or Zoning Board of Examiners and Appeals. Review applications for buildings and land use permits for compliance with the zoning codes and conduct final zoning inspections. Meet with the public community councils and other community groups and provide requested services. Performs additional permit plan review as needed.Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / PreferencesHigh school diploma, GED, or equivalent and two years of technical level engineering experience in one or more of the following fields: drafting, surveying, inspection, materials testing, plan review, permitting, computerized mapping, computer assisted design (CAD), traffic signal control, code enforcement, or a related field which included one year in the appropriate field at the Engineering Technician I level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere. Must possess a valid driver's license.Substitution: Post-secondary education in the fields listed above or a related field may substitute on a year for year basis for up to one year of the required experience.NOTICEThis is a “flex” position. Employees are generally hired at the entry/trainee level. When the employee meets the minimum qualifications of the Engineering Technician III position, grade 14 (higher level job class) and management determines performance is at the full proficiency level, the employee may be “flexed” to the higher level job class.If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.Additional Important InformationPrefer applicants with code or law enforcement experience in receiving complaints, investigating, issuing citations, and causing abatement of violations through judicial or quasi-judicial processes. Prefer applicants with excellent oral and written communications skills. Prefer experience utilizing Word, Excel, Outlook, other windows based software, and automated permit systems.
