    Description

    Clean Energy Application Engineer

    Job Summary
We are seeking a Clean Energy Application Engineer to support the design, coordination, and implementation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. This role focuses on high-efficiency and non-carbon-based heating and cooling technologies, including water-source heat pump applications. You will blend hands-on engineering expertise with customer-facing and project support responsibilities, partnering across sales, engineering, project management, contractors, and other stakeholders. From pre-sale engineering and design development through construction, commissioning, and closeout, you will help ensure solutions align with applicable codes, project specifications, schedules, and cost objectives.

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare engineering layouts, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and heat pump systems.
    • Perform equipment selection and sizing based on project requirements.
    • Conduct load calculations, energy analysis, and other engineering calculations.
    • Develop schematic designs and support design development and construction documentation.
    • Evaluate equipment and system configurations to identify appropriate technical solutions.
    • Apply sustainable design principles and energy-efficiency best practices.
    • Ensure designs meet applicable building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Collaborate with the sales team during pre-sale and project development phases to evaluate requirements and develop technical solutions.
    • Provide engineering input on equipment selection, system configuration, performance, and application requirements.
    • Assist in developing technical concepts and documentation to support customer proposals.
    • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Support the transition of projects from sales/design development into project execution.
    • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, contractors, project managers, and other engineering disciplines to resolve design conflicts.
    • Support project managers with design packages and technical deliverables for customer review and approval.
    • Participate in project meetings and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Review equipment submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and other construction documentation.
    • Provide engineering support during construction and installation, including site visits and inspections as required.
    • Review field conditions and installation quality for consistency with design intent; help resolve technical issues.
    • Support system commissioning and functional performance testing; document field observations and design revisions.
    • Prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, basis-of-design documents, calculations, and other deliverables.
    • Maintain accurate, organized technical documentation and records of calculations, decisions, revisions, and field observations.
    • Participate in value-engineering activities and support lifecycle cost and energy analysis when required.
    • Apply relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC, IPC, and applicable building codes).
    • Incorporate energy-efficiency and sustainable-design principles and stay current on evolving codes, standards, and clean-energy HVAC technologies.

    Requirements

    Required Skills & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
    • Approximately 3–5 years of experience in MEP design, engineering, or a related technical environment.
    • Experience with mechanical and building systems design, including understanding of HVAC, heat pump, electrical, and/or plumbing systems.
    • Experience performing equipment selection, sizing, load calculations, and/or related engineering analysis.
    • Strong understanding of construction processes and building systems integration.
    • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, submittals, and construction documentation.
    • Knowledge of applicable building codes and engineering standards.
    • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to varied audiences.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
    • Proficiency with AutoCAD MEP, Revit, and/or comparable BIM and engineering design software.
    • Understanding of construction documents, specifications, shop drawings, and RFIs.
    • Experience developing engineering calculations and technical documentation.

    Nice to Have Skills

    • Familiarity with energy modeling and engineering calculation software (preferred).
    • Experience with water-source heat pumps, heat pump systems, electrification, high-efficiency HVAC, or other clean-energy technologies.
    • Experience supporting commercial, industrial, or institutional projects.
    • Experience providing technical or application engineering support to a sales organization.
    • Experience supporting projects from design through construction and commissioning.

    Preferred Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (as listed above).
    • 3–5 years of relevant MEP design/engineering experience.

    Other Requirements

    • EIT certification preferred.
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus but not required.
    • Interest in pursuing additional professional credentials or certifications related to engineering, energy efficiency, or sustainable design.
