Job Description:

Teacher - Full Time - Reading Specialist 2026-2026 School Year

40 hours/week; 10 month position

CT Certification required

Ben Bronz Academy is a State of Connecticut approved special education day school for students in grades 1-12 with learning disabilities. Our goal is to help students with learning disabilities learn to identify and correct their functional weaknesses and to develop strong, spontaneous thinking habits that build self-confidence and foster greater curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. We have a 3:1 student to teacher ratio and a proven, structured, individualized program.

Job Summary:

To effectively assess and diagnose student literacy needs, design and deliver intentional early intervention or remedial reading/writing instruction through small groups, progress monitor student achievement, and actively collaborate and coordinate with classroom teachers around student achievement.

Essential Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Identifies students' specific areas of academic need; administers diagnostic assessments; analyzes data to create and implement a program of early intervention or remediation that includes goal setting and progress monitoring
  • Helps teachers organize flexible groupings within the classrooms for small group instruction/intervention
  • Works collaboratively with teachers and staff to support the connection between core classroom instruction and interventions
  • Helps coordinate Academy assessments
  • Uploads, manages, and analyzes student data
  • Participates in regular data team meetings and ppt meetings as needed
  • Communicates with parents concerning individual students
  • Keeps informed of current trends and practices in reading instruction through professional reading, workshops and conferences and shares their learning with others
  • Demonstrates and models best practices around remedial, small group, and differentiated reading instruction
  • Maintains literacy center or location for various literacy materials

  • Implement school policies and rules governing student life and conduct
  • Promote and uphold goals and objectives of the Academy
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research and potential applications of educational technology in learning
  • Participate in committees for the operation or improvement of the Academy
  • Serve as a professional resource to other staff members
  • Demonstrate an on-going interest in educational changes and professional growth
  • Uphold the ethics of the teaching profession (CT Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers)
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding personal student and family information
  • Other appropriate responsibilities as assigned by the Education Director

Specific Responsibilities:

Provide assessment, direct instruction, peer coaching and consultation to improve literacy outcomes for students. Work collaboratively with teachers in planning literacy instruction.

  • Lead teams in the instruction, assessment, and strategic implementation of interventions in literacy
  • Work directly with teachers in classrooms to implement highly effective and proven instructional practices
  • Lead staff in analyzing student data and developing instructional plans to address students' strengths and needs
  • Design and implement PD for all staff
  • Cultivate and maintain resources and materials to support teaching and learning in related areas
  • Work with staff to strengthen their ability to differentiate instruction
  • Consult with teachers to improve their classroom effectiveness
  • Support effective programming, teaching, and learning in related areas of study or research
  • Organize formative and summative assessments and results, including benchmark and state/national assessments
  • Perform other tasks as appropriately assigned
