About the Position

This position designs, constructs, and maintains the stormwater and drainage infrastructure the Tallahassee community relies on, working across both office and field settings. The position may be filled at the Civil Engineer I, Civil Engineer II, or Civil Engineer III level depending on qualifications, ranging from entry-level work supported by hands-on fieldwork and close mentorship to leading complex stormwater projects, making independent design decisions, and mentoring others. Each level carries opportunity for continued professional growth.

What Youll Do

• Help design and support projects that reduce flood risk and manage stormwater across the City
• Prepare plans, cost estimates, and reports that guide how we build and maintain our drainage infrastructure
• Review site and development plans to make sure new stormwater-related projects meet City standards
• Track rainfall and stream data, and lend support when severe weather calls for emergency response
• Work closely with contractors, developers, and other City departments and agencies to keep stormwater projects moving forward
• Grow into greater leadership over time, from guiding project teams to managing larger stormwater initiatives

Minimum Training and Experience

This position may be filled at the Civil Engineer I, Civil Engineer II, or Civil Engineer III level, depending on qualifications.

Civil Engineer I

Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field

Civil Engineer II

Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field and two (2) years of professional experience in the assigned area

Civil Engineer III

Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field and five (5) years of professional experience in the assigned area

Necessary Special Requirements

All Levels

At the Department Directors discretion, a valid Class E State Drivers License (or equivalent) may be required at the time of appointment for designated positions

Civil Engineer I

Must obtain NCEES Engineer Intern (EI) registration within two (2) years of employment

Civil Engineer II

Must possess NCEES Engineer Intern (EI) registration (Transportation Land Use excluded)

Civil Engineer III

• Must possess Professional Engineer (PE) licensure at the time of application and obtain Florida licensure within one (1) year of employment
• Incumbents in designated positions are required to file a financial disclosure statement in compliance with Florida Statutes, Chapter 112, Part III

Emergency Assignment

This position is designated as essential personnel. During declared emergencies, including hurricanes and other severe weather events, the employee is required to report for duty and remain on duty as assigned. Assignments may involve extended hours, overnight or multi-day shifts, and continued service away from home and family through the duration of the event and the recovery period that follows.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary

$29.0888 to $78.9348/hourly

Salary will be based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
