The selected candidate will work closely with engineering, operations, licensing, and other technical stakeholders to develop and implement risk-informed tools and processes that support nuclear safety, operational decision-making, and regulatory compliance.
We're looking for someone who can work independently, navigate complex engineering challenges, and communicate effectively across multiple teams while delivering accurate, high-quality technical work.
Location flexibility: Charlotte, NC is preferred; however, qualified candidates may be considered at other Duke Energy nuclear facilities.
Nuclear Engineering & Risk-Informed Applications
Develop technical documentation and supporting engineering evaluations for nuclear risk-informed initiatives.
Support 10 CFR 50.69 categorizations, Surveillance Test Risk-Informed Documented Evaluations (STRIDE), and Risk-Informed Completion Times (RICT).
Research engineering documentation and provide technical references to third-party organizations.
Review technical deliverables with nuclear site engineering and operations personnel.
Investigate and resolve system design, operational, and technical questions arising during project activities.
Evaluate engineering alternatives and recommend solutions that support nuclear safety and regulatory compliance.
Engineering Analysis & Technical Documentation
Identify, analyze, and resolve complex engineering and plant system issues.
Evaluate the impact of engineering decisions at both individual plant and fleet-wide levels.
Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, analyses, correspondence, and supporting documentation.
Present technical findings, recommendations, and potential solutions to stakeholders.
Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, procedures, and technical standards.
Maintain accurate, organized engineering documentation that meets applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
Project Coordination & Stakeholder Collaboration
Collaborate with engineering, operations, licensing, and cross-functional project teams.
Plan and execute assigned engineering activities, including estimating, scheduling, and progress reporting.
Manage multiple technical workstreams while maintaining project quality and deadlines.
Coordinate technical reviews and communicate project status to appropriate stakeholders.
Exercise sound engineering judgment while working with limited supervision.
Minimum 5 years of relevant nuclear plant or corporate engineering experience.
Previous experience in the utility industry, preferably within nuclear station engineering or operations.
Working knowledge of Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) or Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) plant systems.
Experience researching and evaluating engineering or system design issues.
Ability to assess technical alternatives, identify potential impacts, and recommend appropriate solutions.
Experience preparing engineering evaluations, technical documentation, and presenting recommendations.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
Experience supporting complex engineering activities in a regulated environment.
Duke Energy nuclear experience is strongly preferred, particularly candidates with established working relationships across engineering, operations, licensing, and other nuclear stakeholders.
Previous employment with Duke Energy or another nuclear utility.
Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) certification, Reactor Operator (RO) license, SRO license, or Technical Nuclear certification.
Experience with Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) methodologies.
Knowledge of risk-informed nuclear applications, including:
10 CFR 50.69
Risk-Informed Inservice Inspection (RI-ISI)
Risk-Informed Completion Times (RICT)
Surveillance Frequency Control Program (SFCP)
Risk-informed technical specifications
Familiarity with nuclear regulatory requirements and engineering compliance practices.
Project management experience.
PMP certification or MBA.
Charlotte, NC is the preferred work location.
Candidates located near other Duke Energy nuclear facilities may also be considered.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
Hybrid arrangements may be available depending on project and site requirements.
Onsite attendance will be required for certain meetings, engineering activities, plant support, badging, and site access.
Periodic visits to nuclear generating stations may be necessary.
The ideal candidate is an experienced nuclear engineering professional who understands how plant systems, engineering design, operations, and regulatory requirements work together.
We're particularly interested in candidates who:
Have hands-on nuclear utility or station engineering experience.
Understand the importance of risk-informed decision-making in nuclear operations.
Can independently research complex technical questions and develop well-supported recommendations.
Are comfortable working with engineering, operations, licensing, and management stakeholders.
Have experience with PRA, nuclear system evaluations, or risk-informed applications.
Take ownership of their work and consistently produce accurate technical documentation.
Can balance multiple priorities while maintaining nuclear safety and quality standards.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to engineering initiatives that directly support nuclear safety, plant reliability, and operational performance.
You'll work with experienced nuclear professionals, support complex risk-informed engineering programs, and apply your technical expertise to projects that have a meaningful impact across Duke Energy's nuclear fleet.
