Purpose of the Position

The City Surveyor leads and performs professional land surveying services essential to the planning, design, and construction of public infrastructure. This position manages all surveying functions for the Department, ensures the accuracy and integrity of survey data, and provides expert technical support to engineering and project management staff to support the successful delivery of public works projects for the City of Wausau.

This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping and supporting the City's infrastructure projects, from initial planning through construction. The City Surveyor works both in the field and in the office, collaborating closely with engineering staff, contractors, and the community. The typical schedule is 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Starting hourly rate of $31.56 or higher DOQ.

This position will be posted until filled, with initial application review starting on April 20th.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads and performs professional land surveying services, including preparation and review of subdivision plats, certified survey maps, plats of survey, and legal descriptions for deeds and easements.
  • Interprets property surveys, deeds, easements, and land records; provides guidance and recommendations to City staff, contractors, developers, and the public.
  • Plans, directs, and performs field survey operations, including boundary, topographic, and construction surveys; ensures accuracy and completeness of field data.
  • Directs and performs construction staking and layout activities using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related tools.
  • Establishes and maintains horizontal and vertical control systems and coordinates with the Wisconsin DOT, including participation in the WISCORS network.
  • Serves as Survey Crew Chief; supervises and participates in field activities including right-of-way location, grade setting, and construction layout.
  • Provides technical support to engineers and engineering technicians in preparing plans, profiles, cross-sections, and construction documents.
  • Performs drafting and mapping work, including survey maps, annexation maps, and municipal mapping; collaborates with GIS staff to support spatial data needs.
  • Advises engineers, contractors, developers, City officials, and the public on surveying-related matters and applicable regulations.
  • Provides training and guidance to Engineering staff on field safety practices and surveying procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or other related field, and
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in surveying and professional engineering, and
  • Professional Land Surveyor license, and
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's license.

Candidates with a Professional Land Surveyor license from a state other than Wisconsin are welcome to apply. Reciprocity must be obtained through the State of Wisconsin DSPS prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications;

  • Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or other related field
  • Experience or training in Autodesk Civil 3D software, Trimble Access and Road field collection software, GPS and conventional surveying equipment and methods, including robotic total stations and automatic and digital levels

A combination of education and experience that provides the depth of knowledge and ability to execute the core functions of this position may be considered.

Physical and Working Environment

The City Surveyor works both in the field and in the office, collaborating closely with engineering staff, contractors, and the community. Work may involve outdoor field conditions in a variety of weather environments, as well as office-based technical and design work. Occasional travel within the City is required.
