Job Description

This part-time position is responsible for providing direct assistance to the public at the Checkout Desk, and assisting with carrying out Circulation Services Department operations, assigned tasks, and special departmental projects.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Head of Circulation

Services and the Circulation Services Manager.

Supervision Exercised: None

Examples of Duties

  • Greets patrons, listens to and understands patron requests, and accurately

provides assistance.

  • Accepts payments for services and makes change quickly and accurately.

Performs basic financial record keeping via computer and on paper. Assists with

daily reconciliation of the Checkout Desk and Adult Information Desk cash

drawers as assigned.

  • Ensures all Circulation Services opening and closing procedures are completed

accurately.

  • Participates in covering open shifts to ensure the Checkout Desk is consistently

fully staffed.

  • Assists patrons with using the online catalog and library equipment, such as

photocopiers and printers.

  • Shelves materials and participates in shelf maintenance, shelf reading, and

organizing materials.

  • Generates and processes circulation reports and notices as assigned,

conducting follow-up with patrons as needed.

  • Proficiently uses the library's computerized circulation system and online catalog

to create new borrower records, check items in and out to patrons, search for

and request items, and handle overdue notices.

  • Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED is required.
  • Two years of satisfactory work experience with the public is required.
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication.
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency utilizing computer hardware and software.
  • Must understand and communicate the library's operational policies to the public.
  • Must understand and regularly review the City of Bismarck's employee policies

and the library's operational policies and procedures.

  • Must be familiar with, affirm, and uphold the library's guiding principles: mission,

vision, and value statements.

  • Must carry oneself with professionalism and integrity with all internal and external

library stakeholders, assuming positive intent in others' actions, words, and

behaviors.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to work effectively under busy and stressful

conditions.

  • Must be flexible with the ability to adapt to changing priorities, processes, and

work environments.

  • Must be adaptable to flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must adhere to the library's Dress Code Policy.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • The work is typically performed in the library while sitting at a desk or table, or

while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.

  • The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. Must be able to push a

fully loaded book cart, shelve books to a height of six feet, and lift 25 pounds of

books at a time.

  • The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from

weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and

occasionally outdoors for special events, occasionally in cold or inclement

weather
