Job Details

We’re looking for a Chief Nursing Officer to lead nursing and clinical support services at a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Sioux Falls with all-private rooms. You’ll join a strong, tenured senior leadership team that works well together, holds itself accountable and always puts what’s best for patients first.

This is a hands-on nursing executive role. You won’t carry a patient assignment, but you’ll be visible on the floor: rounding on patients, supporting staff and setting the standard for clinical excellence and regulatory compliance. The hospital is in a stable position, with nursing support staff fully staffed, minimal agency use and planned bed growth ahead.

What you’ll do:

Lead all nursing operations with 24-hour accountability for patient care
Lead 6 direct reports: the nurse manager, respiratory therapy, dietitian, hospital educator, wound care and infection prevention
Support a nursing leadership structure that includes a nurse manager plus day and night supervisors
Oversee staffing, FTE management and productivity, with 6:1 ratios supported by techs
Own nursing policies, procedures and budget
Keep the hospital continuously survey-ready and in compliance with Joint Commission and CMS standards
Round daily on patients and staff, and stay visible and approachable on the floor
Lead recruitment, retention and engagement efforts to keep turnover low and agency use minimal
Handle performance management and disciplinary action when needed
Help plan nursing for future bed growth
Work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team on quality, patient outcomes and hospital performance

What you bring:

A current, unrestricted RN license for South Dakota (or compact)
BLS certification (ACLS preferred)
A bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field
A master’s degree, current enrollment in a master’s program, or willingness to enroll within 6–12 months of hire
5+ years of inpatient hospital experience
2+ years of recent (within the last 5 years) nursing leadership experience, including 24-hour accountability, FTE management, policy and procedure, budget oversight and disciplinary action
CRRN certification, obtained within one year of becoming eligible to sit for the exam
