Chief Medical Officer, Supply Chain

The Supply Chain CMO will serve as a clinically credible leader connecting physicians and service lines with Supply Chain Management, Clinical Integration, Value Analysis, Quality, Finance, Analytics and Operational leadership. The Supply Chain CMO will help Duke move beyond product-by-product decision-making toward a coordinated, evidence-based and clinically led approach to value.  This is a part-time Physician or Advanced Practice Provider role which will require approximately 50% leadership effort, or roughly 20 hours per week, while maintaining an appropriate level of clinical practice. The final clinical and administrative schedule will be developed with the selected Department leadership.  Both physicians and Advanced Practice Providers are welcome to apply. 

Key Responsibilities:

         Build trusted relationships with physicians, department chairs and service-line leaders

         Ensure physician perspectives are incorporated early into major sourcing, product and technology decisions

         Help establish effective physician governance for clinically sensitive categories

         Facilitate alignment when clinical preferences, operational requirements and financial considerations differ

         Identify opportunities to reduce unwarranted clinical product and practice variation

         Support physician-led utilization strategies in high-impact clinical categories

         Help determine whether differences in product use are supported by evidence, outcomes or patient need

         Sponsor adoption strategies that preserve appropriate clinical choice while improving consistency and value

         Strengthen the clinical rigor of Duke's value-analysis and new-technology review processes

         Support evaluation of clinical evidence, safety, quality, outcomes, workflow and total cost

         Help distinguish meaningful clinical innovation from unsupported preference or product proliferation

         Ensure physicians and clinical stakeholders are engaged before decisions affect care delivery

         Provide clinical guidance for major sourcing initiatives involving medical devices, supplies, equipment and clinical services

         Support appropriate product standardization and aggregation strategies

         Help sourcing teams understand clinical requirements, procedural differences and adoption risks

         Serve as a clinical escalation point when consensus cannot be reached through normal governance

         Engage suppliers and industry leaders on clinical capability, evidence, innovation and future technology

         Help Duke ask better clinical questions of manufacturers and service providers

         Provide an objective physician perspective during strategic supplier discussions

         Support relationships that advance Duke's clinical, academic and innovation missions while maintaining appropriate independence

Preferred Work Experience:

         Minimum of 7 years of clinical practice, participation in a leadership role in medical staff organization activities, and thorough management experience within a health care delivery system

         Minimum of 3-5 years of management experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent analytical skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Solid interpersonal and listening skills to interact effectively with individuals of all backgrounds, experience and educational levels

Preferred qualifications for Physician candidates: 

• MD or DO with unrestricted medical license
• Board certification in medical management
• Healthcare administration (MHA, MBA, MPA, etc.) preferred

Preferred qualifications for APP candidates:       

• BLS and Masters Degree
• National certification as an NP or PA
