CHIEF ENGINEER Seaport Residence Inn - Boston, MA Location: 370 Congress Street Availability: weekdays & weekends; on call for emergencies Position Summary: The Chief Engineer oversees all hotel maintenance operations, including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and building systems. This role ensures the property remains safe, efficient, and well-maintained while leading the engineering team and managing vendor relationships. Basic Responsibilities - Conduct regular inspections of the hotel's physical structure, guest areas and equipment.
- Hire, train, supervise, and discipline departmental staff and all independent contractors under the direction of property operations, such as painters, upholsterers, and groundskeepers.
- Oversee all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and preventive maintenance programs.
- Maintain organized tools, equipment inventory, and administrative systems.
- Assign, verify, and participate in the completion of all routine maintenance in public spaces, meeting rooms, outlets, back of house spaces, and grounds.
- Ensure compliance with all building codes, fire safety regulations, and corporate purchasing policies.
- Manage energy efficiency programs and provide training on safe equipment use.
- Report building conditions, maintenance needs, and cost-effective solutions to the General Manager.
- Assign and verify completion of all repairs, replacements, and renovation projects to offices, public spaces, guest rooms, and employee work areas.
- Adhere to corporate purchasing policies and controls including outside contractor bids, budgets, and schedules.
- Maintain appropriate supply of materials and equipment to carry out normal day-to-day operating and maintenance requirements of the hotel.
- Secure fully executed copies of Claremont’s Standard Agreement with subcontractors and service providers when appropriate.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with guests, vendors, co-workers, and management.
- Responsible for the overall preventive maintenance program for all guest rooms, public spaces, and hotel equipment, setting high standards to maintain above-brand guest satisfaction scores.
Skills and Abilities: - Excellent knowledge of electrical systems, components and devices, HVAC systems, boilers, mechanical systems, and their maintenance and repair.
- Excellent knowledge of public construction and building systems and codes; all related permits, licenses, and existing codes pertaining to public building and fire safety.
- Positive communication skills with associates and vendors.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, or use a man-lift to work at heights up to 30 feet, often reaching overhead.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
Qualifications: - High School diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of building or hotel maintenance experience.
- Experience with electrical and mechanical systems required.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- Associate’s degree or Certification in Building Maintenance is a plus.
