    JOB SUMMARY

    Participates, plans, and supervises the general cleaning of assigned facility to ensure a safe and sanitary learning environment for students and staff along with operating boilers and maintaining variety of mechanical equipment.

    Based on the assignment, the following additional work days and/or hours may be required as needed:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Makes minor plumbing, electrical, general maintenance, and custodial equipment repairs.
    • Performs cleaning and inspects facilities and grounds to ensure maintenance of safety, sanitary, and security standards on a daily basis.
    • Performs preventive maintenance and operates the heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment in a safe and efficient manner to provide a comfortable interior climate within established guidelines.
    • Opens, closes, and locks buildings and gates, or assigns tasks to responsible subordinate.
    • Assists the principal or designee in preparing work requests.
    • Maintains records of area inspections, inventory, training, and equipment maintenance as required.
    • Instructs employees in the proper use of building services, supplies, equipment, and cleaning procedures.
    • Oversees and participates in the snow removal program.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.

    Experience

    • Three (3) years general minor building maintenance repair experience required; or
    • Three (3) years specific AACPS Custodian I experience required; and
    • One (1) year general heating and cooling equipment experience preferred; and
    • Two (2) years specific professional cleaning preferred; and
    • One (1) year general supervisory and/or lead experience preferred; and
    • Six (6) months specific Anne Arundel County Public Schools Lead Custodian experience preferred; and
    • Six (6) months specific Anne Arundel County Public Schools Lead and/or Chief Custodian acting assignments preferred.
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

    • Ability to speak, read and write English sufficiently to give and receive instructions.
    • Knowledge of and ability to ensure compliance with Right to Know Law, Asbestos Awareness, Blood Borne Pathogens and general cleaning methods and procedures, and handling of cleaning equipment and chemicals, including proper disposal.
    • Ability to operate custodial and grounds care equipment.
    • Ability to safely use and operate genie lift; training provided if necessary.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
    • Ability to employ business technology tools as required of all AACPS employees, e.g. E-mail, obtaining relevant AACPS employee information through the AACPS Intranet, employing the electronic benefits enrollment tool and any other electronic tools implemented in the future.
    • Provides basic hand tools.

    Licenses and Certifications

    Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

    • Successful completion of 4th Grade Stationary Engineer License issued by Maryland Board of Stationary Engineers required; or
    • Successful completion of Introduction to Operations Equipment & Plant Procedures Course and Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
    • Consideration will be given to candidates who can achieve a passing grade on Introduction to Operations Equipment & Plant Procedures Course and Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; and
    • Successful completion of Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or
    • First available after appointment Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required.
