Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Chemical Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the installation, general maintenance, and repair of all chemical feed and handling equipment, including Chlorine. This position also performs unloading of chemicals from trucks and transports via various delivery systems to storage areas within the facility.
Education
- Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Minimum Requirements
- Required - Minimum of 1 year performing general maintenance work.
- Preferred - Minimum of 1 year performing maintenance of mechanical systems.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing
- Required - Have and maintain a valid driver's license Upon Hire and
- Required - State of Nebraska Grade IV (4) Water Operator License within 180 Days and
- Required - HAZMAT Certification Technician Level A Certification and serve on the District's HAZMAT team within 1 Year and
- Required - Certified to wear an Air Purifying Respirator and a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in order to comply with confined entry procedures and/or chemical exposure. Certification requires completing a Medical Questionnaire, passing a Pulmonary Function Test, Fit Test and compliance with the guidelines of the District's Respiratory Protection Program. within 60 Days and
- Required - Obtain lift-truck certification for operation of a forklift and pallet-jack within 120 Days and
- Required - Must attend and complete the District's Confined Space Training program prior to any work related to any confined space entry. within 180 Days
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with other non-hazardous and hazardous chemicals when assisting at other plants as needed.
- Knowledgeable in the safe handling of water treatment chemicals.
- Mechanical ability and experience with hand and power tools. (Intermediate proficiency)
- Ability to comprehend and follow written or oral instructions.
- Perform routine math in order to calibrate equipment.
- Use equipment such as ladders, hydraulic/scissor lifts, and other aerial platforms to access equipment, as necessary.
- Excellent communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.
- Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include, but not limited to, familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP). (Entry proficiency)
- Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.
- Platte West Only: - Ability to work with non-hazardous and hazardous chemicals including, but not limited to, chemicals such as: chlorine, calcium/sodium hypochlorites, fluoride, lime, sodium hexametaphosphate, ammonia, ferric sulfate, hydrochloric acid for pH adjustment and sodium bisulfite for dechlorination to comply with permitting requirements.
Essential Functions
- Install, maintain, and calibrate chemical feeding and handling equipment including metering pumps, transfer pumps, dry chemical feeders, lime slakers, pneumatic unloading system, chlorine liquid/gas pressure regulating and feeding equipment, and the chlorine scrubber. Prepare and document such work.
- Unload various dry and aqueous chemicals from trucks/railcars to storage locations using necessary transport equipment.
- Unload, switch, and position 1 ton chlorine containers from trucks into storage and feeding areas utilizing overhead crane.
- Operate valves and connections to offload bulk shipments of liquid chemicals into bulk storage tanks and day tanks.
- Clean all equipment and areas after various operations and during maintenance cycles.
- Assist with work activities involving disinfection of basins, filters, and finished water reservoirs.
- Assist with the maintenance, testing, and documentation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and Level A suit.
- Perform the physical requirements of the position as outlined within the Physical Demands Analysis.
- Assist the Chemical Equipment Mechanic II on documenting the status of water treatment chemicals, chemical feed and handling equipment, and chemical equipment parts inventory.
- Assist Chemical Equipment Mechanic II and Instrumentation Technicians in maintaining, calibration, and documentation of work done on process and water quality analytical and monitoring equipment including but not limited to chlorine residual analyzers, chloramine analyzers, pH probes, temperature probes, and sampling pumps.
- Respond to Stop and/or Clean-up Leaks or Spills of hazardous chemicals at locations around the District as requested.
- Assist, as necessary, Water Plant Maintenance Mechanics with maintenance of other plant equipment as required.
- Perform a variety of other duties as assigned including, but not limited to, general maintenance, basin washing, grounds maintenance and residuals processing activities.
- Participates in cross-training programs at all three Water Production facilities to develop and ensure adequate level of training on all District Chemical Equipment.
- Drive a District vehicle.
- Platte West Responsibilities Only: -Operate truck mounted snowplows, snowblowers, and other equipment during snow removal operations as needed. -Assist with operation and maintenance of Plate & Frame Filter Presses as needed. -Assist Plant & Wellfield Maintenance Workers and/or Water Plant Maintenance Mechanics with maintenance of wellfield equipment as needed.
