    CHAMBERSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT 435 Stanley Avenue Chambersburg, Pa. 17201 Job Title: School District Police Officer FLSA Status: Non-exempt Department: Security Reports to: Director of Safety Approvals: HR Reviewed: Date:__ Superintendent: __Date:__ Board Approved (date): General Purpose: Provide law enforcement to district schools and protect employees, students and property in order to create a safe and healthy learning environment Position Summary: Patrols School District facilities and grounds to prevent disruptive or illegal actions, access to restricted areas, theft or vandalism on an assigned or rotating shift Provides a means to disseminate, share, advise and coordinate information on the value of qualified law enforcement officers for primary, elementary, middle, and high school teachers Demonstrates, by example and other means, the dangers associated with alcohol and drugs, criminal activities, and other anti-social behavior Performs a variety of assignments which can require being in a fixed location or a mobile unit or being exposed to uncontrolled and/or unpredictable conditions Performs duties in uniform or in plainclothes depending on the type of assignment Essential Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Provide diligent patrol to district schools and property in order to deter crimes against students, staff or property Enforce PA Crime Codes by making arrests or issuing citations for violations on school property Respond to emergencies at district buildings or on school buses Act as liaison between the District, local communities and local law enforcement agencies Enforce school district attendance, rules and policies Conduct investigations of residency and truancy cases; prepare related truancy citations as required Conduct investigations of crimes and cases of employee misconduct ensuring that evidence is collected and preserved Provide supervision of student behavior including loading and unloading of school buses Prepare necessary disciplinary referrals, reports and logs Monitor traffic and parking on and around district property Attend court hearings as necessary Facilitate/Participate in related district committees including the safe schools committee, crisis team, etc. Coordinate through building administrators and school counselors effective prevention strategies Deliver technical and law enforcement related assistance on all security matters Review of all District safety and security policies and procedures for a common and enforceable language and purpose and conduct updated security training of all school district personnel as needed Patrol halls - visible presence circulating between class periods Track usage of district buildings and determine if security is required. Be the point of contact for security requests Serves as District Police Officer during special events as needed Enforce parking restrictions and issue traffic and non-traffic citations Cafeteria and parking lot supervision Performs other duties as assigned Educational Functions Classroom resource for instruction in law related education, violence diffusion, safety programs, alcohol and drug prevention, crime prevention, and other areas Member of the faculty and administrative team working hand in hand to solve problems in the school community Resource for the students which will enable them to be associated with a law enforcement figure in the student's environment Resource to teachers, parents, and students for conferences on an individual basis, dealing with individual problems or questions Counseling resource in areas which may affect the educational environment but may be of a law related nature Bridge the gap between police officers and young people and increase positive attitudes towards law enforcement Promote respect for people and property Take personal interest in students and their activities Reduce juvenile crime by helping students formulate an awareness of rules, authority and justice Performs other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required Understanding of school law, special education law, and criminal law Act 120 Certification or Graduate from Pennsylvania State Police Academy Willingness to complete additional training for School Police Officers Demonstrated ability to: o Learn the principles of criminal investigation and the techniques of interrogation o Learn the standard practices and procedures used in protecting buildings and property and regulating the activities of the public o Cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others o Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine a proper course of action to be taken o Gain the confidence and respect of students and faculty o Work with large groups of students o Understand and carry out oral and written instructions o Maintain records and prepare reports o Establish and maintain effective working relationships Preferred Minimum 10 years of experience as a law enforcement officer Conditions of Employment/Required Education and Certification Training as required under 53 Pa.C.S.
