    Position Summary

    The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as Chair for the Department of Emergency Medicine.

    This recruitment is Open Track/Open Rank, and the appropriate track and rank will be determined once the top candidate is selected.

    The Department of Emergency Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in clinical care, education, research, and service. The Department's mission is to improve the health of patients and communities through outstanding emergency care, innovative research, exceptional education, and meaningful service to the people of North Carolina and beyond.

    The Department is comprised of faculty physicians, advanced practice providers, residents, fellows, researchers, educators, and professional staff working across multiple clinical, educational, research, and administrative programs. Faculty members provide care throughout UNC Hospitals and affiliated UNC Health facilities while serving as leaders in emergency medicine, emergency medical services, critical care, disaster preparedness, quality improvement, patient safety, and healthcare innovation.

    Our clinical programs provide comprehensive emergency care to patients with acute illness and injury. As a major academic referral center and safety-net provider, the Department serves diverse populations and collaborates extensively with healthcare providers, community partners, and health systems to improve care, quality, and outcomes.

    Education is a central mission of the Department. UNC Emergency Medicine sponsors ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship training programs and provides educational experiences for medical students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and interprofessional learners. Through innovative curricula, mentorship, and scholarly activity, the Department is committed to developing the next generation of leaders in emergency medicine.

    Research activities span clinical, translational, operational, implementation, health services, injury prevention, and population health sciences. Faculty investigators collaborate broadly across UNC Health, the School of Medicine, and the University to advance emergency care through scientific discovery, innovation, and dissemination of new knowledge.

    The Chair serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Department and is responsible for advancing all aspects of the Department's clinical, educational, research, and service missions. The Chair will provide strategic leadership, oversee faculty recruitment and development, ensure operational and financial stewardship, strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations, foster an inclusive and supportive culture, and advance the Department's local, regional, and national reputation.

    In addition to a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine, the selected candidate will hold a secondary EHRA Non-Faculty administrative appointment as Department Chair. This structure is consistent with recent School of Medicine department chair recruitments.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    MD or equivalent.
