The company I am recruiting for is seeking a strategic, hands-on Chief Financial Officer to join the leadership team and provide financial leadership for the breadth of the business. The company is a 63-year-old private SME company ranked in the top 1% for equipment distribution and service in Texas. As the CFO you will report to the COO and owner of the company to translate the companies priorities into sustainable financial strategies that improve outcomes and create future growth opportunities. You will evaluate financial performance, strengthen internal controls, improve operational efficiencies, and guide budgeting and forecasting.

 

This role offers the opportunity to lead financial strategy and daily operations at scale, strengthen long-range planning and financial transparency for all senior stakeholders. The role carries responsibility for the financial oversight of complex payroll operations, client-related liabilities, benefits accounting, workers’ compensation accounting, payroll tax compliance, regulatory reporting and the full accounting process and oversight of 3 support staff for AP, AR and expenses.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and financial reporting.
  • You have to enjoy the challenge of the variety of work an SME CFO is required to manage from designing processes to HR to forecasting and more.
  • Understand the complexity of the personalities you will deal with from building services to the chairman in an SME.
  • Direct the month-end and year-end close process and ensure timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP delivered monthly to leadership.
  • Develop budgets, forecasts, financial models, and cash flow projections.
  • Provide executive leadership with financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee payroll funding and cash management to ensure timely payroll processing.
  • Manage payroll tax liabilities, deposits, reconciliations, and regulatory reporting.
  • Ensure accurate accounting for payroll, administrative fees, benefits, workers’ compensation, and employer tax obligations.
  • Review client profitability and financial performance delivered monthly to leadership.
  • Oversee client billing, funding reconciliations, and receivables collection.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Oversee payroll tax compliance and agency reporting.
  • Coordinate and oversee annual financial and other regulatory audits, tax filings, and banking relationships.
  • Ability to understand and produce equipment amortization charts.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all banking covenants and financial reporting obligations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes through automation and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve operational efficiency and financial visibility.
  • Develop departmental KPIs and performance metrics.
  • Experience within a SME, construction, equipment sales, payroll services, staffing, or outsourced HR environment strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, payroll tax regulations, payroll funding, and financial reporting.
  • Advanced QuickBooks and ERP/accounting system proficiency.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field required – MBA preferred.
  • Current Texas CPA license required.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience.
  • Previous CFO or Assistant CFO experience required.
  • Problem solver.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills required.
  • Proven team leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Must be coachable and a team player!
  • Must be ready to wear many hats.
