Description
Birch Agency is hiring a Certified School Nurse (CSN) for a school-based position located in the Oak Lawn, IL area. This position is an immediate need with the potential for renewal for the next school year. The Certified School Nurse will provide comprehensive health services and support to students, helping ensure a safe and healthy learning environment while collaborating with educators, families, and healthcare providers.
Key ResponsibilitiesHealth Assessment & Student Care

  • Conduct health screenings, assessments, and evaluations for students.

  • Identify and address health concerns that may impact student learning and participation.

  • Assess and respond to illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies occurring during the school day.

  • Develop and maintain individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) for students with medical needs.

  • Administer medications and medical treatments in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and district policies.
Health Services & Intervention

  • Provide direct nursing care for students with chronic and acute health conditions.

  • Monitor student health status and document interventions and outcomes.

  • Support students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, and other healthcare needs.

  • Coordinate healthcare services and referrals with families, physicians, and community providers.

  • Promote student wellness through health education and disease prevention initiatives.
Compliance & Case Management

  • Participate in the development and implementation of 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when health-related services are required.

  • Maintain accurate and compliant health records in accordance with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), IDEA, FERPA, and district guidelines.

  • Ensure compliance with immunization requirements, health examinations, and mandated screenings.

  • Monitor and maintain documentation related to student health services and nursing caseloads.
Collaboration

  • Work closely with teachers, special education staff, administrators, school psychologists, social workers, and related service providers.

  • Provide consultation and training to school personnel regarding student health needs, emergency procedures, and medication administration.

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns and care plans.

  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain nursing notes, health records, medication logs, and incident reports.

  • Track service delivery and student healthcare needs.

  • Prepare reports as required by district, state, and federal regulations.

  • Ensure confidentiality and security of all student health information.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

  • Current and valid Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse Endorsement or eligibility to obtain.

  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.

  • Knowledge of school health regulations, nursing standards, and student health management practices.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Certified School Nurse or pediatric nurse.

  • Knowledge of IEPs, 504 Plans, and special education processes.

  • Experience working with diverse student populations and complex medical needs.

  • Strong communication, organization, and case management skills.
