Position Overview
Birch Agency is seeking a dedicated and compassionate
Certified School Nurse (CSN) for a school-based opportunity in
Calumet City, Illinois.
This is a
part-time position (1-2 days per week) focused on supporting student evaluations, providing nursing consultation, and collaborating with the school team to ensure students receive appropriate health-related services. The district currently has a
full-time nurse in the health office, and this role will serve as additional nursing support, assisting with evaluations, documentation, and team collaboration as needed.
Preferred schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays, though flexibility may be considered based on candidate availability and district needs.
The Certified School Nurse will play an important role in supporting student health, wellness, and educational success while working closely with educators, families, and related service providers.
Key ResponsibilitiesHealth Assessment & Student Care
Conduct health screenings, assessments, and evaluations for students.
Assist with nursing evaluations and recommendations related to special education services.
Identify and address health concerns that may affect student learning and school participation.
Assess and respond to student health concerns as needed during assigned hours.
Develop and maintain Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with medical needs.
Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, Illinois regulations, and district policies when required.
Health Services & Intervention
Provide nursing consultation and support regarding acute and chronic health conditions.
Monitor student health status and document interventions and outcomes.
Support students with asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, allergies, and other healthcare needs.
Coordinate healthcare services and referrals with families, physicians, and community providers.
Promote wellness through health education and prevention initiatives.
Compliance & Case Management
Participate in the development and implementation of 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when health-related services are required.
Complete nursing evaluations and provide documentation for multidisciplinary team meetings.
Maintain accurate student health records in compliance with ISBE, IDEA, FERPA, and district requirements.
Ensure compliance with immunization requirements, student health examinations, and mandated screenings.
Collaboration
Work closely with the district's full-time health office nurse and student support teams.
Attend team meetings and provide professional nursing input regarding student needs and accommodations.
Partner with teachers, administrators, special education staff, psychologists, social workers, and related service providers.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student health concerns and care plans.
Serve as a liaison between schools, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain nursing notes, evaluation reports, medication logs, health records, and incident reports.
Track service delivery and student healthcare needs.
Prepare reports as required by district, state, and federal regulations.
Ensure confidentiality and security of student health information.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
Current and active Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with School Nurse Endorsement, or eligibility to obtain.
Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Knowledge of school health regulations, nursing standards, and student health management practices.
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and support special education evaluation processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience as a Certified School Nurse in a school setting.
Experience conducting health evaluations and participating in IEP and 504 meetings.
Familiarity with Illinois school health requirements and special education procedures.
Strong communication, organization, and case management skills.
Experience working with diverse student populations and medically complex students.
