Why This Role Matters

The Certified Oncology Data Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy of the data collected in accordance with state and national mandated regulations to support Novant Health's Cancer Institutes.

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for any combination of Cancer Registry functions including, but not limited to: case finding, abstracting, follow-up, monitoring, and statistical reporting of all reportable benign and malignant neoplasms diagnosed or treated within the Novant Health Cancer Institute.
  • Case finding: Analyze pathology reports and ICD-10 patient lists from various sources to determine case eligibility and flag cases for the suspense system.
  • Abstracting: Analyze patient information required for state and national reporting and code the information in the electronic data base utilizing the required coding sources including, but not limited to: ICD0-3, Standards for Oncology Registry Entry, AJCC TNM Staging, SEER Summary Staging, Solid Tumor Rules, and the current state cancer collection manual.
  • Data Entry: Enter the required patient information accurately and in timely manner to meet requirements and data edit standards for the National Cancer Data Base and NC Central Cancer Registry.
  • Follow-Up: Analyze patient encounters for subsequent treatment, recurrences, patient status, and current last date of contact and updates patient records to maintain the department and national standard for follow-up rates for required patient populations. Review patient death information sources to determine patient expiration and cause of death.
  • Monitoring: Review monthly edit reports and annual national call for data edits and resolve any related coding issues for compliance.
  • Quality Control: Meet the department standard for data quality and productivity for the job role.
  • Professional Development: Educational Maintenance of the ODS credential.

What You Will Need

Required:

  • Certified Oncology Data Specialist credentials.
  • High School Diploma or GED with at least 6 years of experience in cancer registry, medical records, nursing, medical oncology, radiation oncology, public health, or research.
  • Associate degree with at least 3 years of experience in cancer registry, medical records, nursing, medical oncology, radiation oncology, public health, or research.
  • Completion of Anatomy, Physiology, Basic Statistics and Epidemiology courses and advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Oncology Knowledge of the disease process, including standards of care: surgical, radiation, and systemic treatment regimes.
  • Knowledge of the American College of Surgeons Program Standards. Coding Courses in ICD0-3, AJCC TNM Staging, SEER Summary Staging, Solid Tumor Rules, and relevant state data collection manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy with Medical Staff, Novant Departments, private physician practices, and non-Novant facilities to obtain patient information to resolve staging or coding issues.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Electronic Registry Systems, Inc registry software and working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
