Position Type: Full-time, 190 days
Reports To: Classroom Teacher and School Nurse
Qualifications
- South Carolina CNA Certification (required)
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (preferred)
- Prior experience working with children or individuals with disabilities (preferred)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (required)
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, nurses, therapists, and families
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality
Position Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides both classroom support and nursing care services for students with special needs. The CNA plays a vital role in supporting students' health, safety, and classroom participation while fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Personal Care and Nursing Support
- Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, hygiene, mobility, and positioning.
- Monitor students' health status and promptly report concerns to the school nurse or supervising teacher.
- Support individualized health care plans as directed by the school nurse.
- Administer basic first aid and assist with emergency medical protocols when necessary.
- Classroom Support
- Assist teachers with instructional activities, classroom management, and student engagement.
- Help implement strategies to support student learning and IEP goals.
- Provide supervision during classroom activities, meals, recess, transitions, and transportation as assigned.
- Use positive behavioral supports to encourage independence and appropriate social interaction.
- Collaboration and Professionalism
- Work effectively with teachers, nurses, therapists, and administrators to support students' educational and health needs.
- Maintain accurate documentation of health services and student support as required.
- Demonstrate flexibility, compassion, and professionalism when supporting students with complex needs.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information at all times.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, position, or transfer students (with assistance/equipment as needed).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist with mobility throughout the school day.
