GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Has the responsibility to ensure compliance with the Connecticut General Statutes and the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and listed references of such code.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports to the Fire Chief or designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Investigates origin and cause of fire along with other inspectors.

Directs investigative work.

Works with a variety of City and State agencies.

Conducts inspections of existing structures, new construction sites, and remodeling sites to ensure compliance with fire safety codes.

Conducts plan review for all construction within the City.

Calculates water fire flows for building requirements.

Operates necessary equipment at fire scene.

Prepares detailed fire reports.

Photographs fire scenes, collects evidence, and addresses all other matters pertaining to his/her responsibilities.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief or designee.

NONESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs fire prevention activities and fire education programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Extensive knowledge of modern fire investigation and plan review methods.

Ability to achieve results that are advantageous to both firefighters and the department.

Extensive knowledge of fire behavior, building construction, sprinkler design and fire alarm systems.

Ability to follow oral and written instruction.

Knowledge of and ability to apply fire prevention principles, procedures, and techniques.

Extensive knowledge of inspection techniques.

Ability to act effectively in emergency/stressful situations ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work with computer systems and programming.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree in fire science or equivalent experience and training. Must possess and maintain State of Connecticut certification as a Fire Marshal. Must possess a valid Connecticut driver's license. Must attain a level of proficiency using self-contained breathing apparatus and respirator.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Computer software and programs related to Fire Investigation, Code Enforcement, Plan Review, and clerical office work. Tools and equipment for fire scene processing and documenting.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to work while in self-contained breathing apparatus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job as a code inspector and fire investigator.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

You must reside within the City of Norwich 60 miles from Norwich within one year of appointment.

Examination will consist of 100% oral.
