Job Summary:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Recreation Specialist plans, coordinates, and supervises recreational and leisure-time programs that promote student engagement, character development, and personal and social growth. This position supports a safe and enriching environment by providing structured activities and appropriate supervision. Availability during evenings and weekends is required.

Job Duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operates GSA vehicles safely and in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
• Supports the planning, organization, and delivery of recreational programs and services.
• Supervises, demonstrates, and instructs students in the proper use of recreational equipment and techniques during on- and off-center activities.
• Maintains accurate inventory using a structured check-in/check-out system for recreational equipment.
• Fosters a positive, engaging environment that encourages student participation.
• Leads and facilitates recreational activities to ensure safe, structured, and well-managed programming.
• Assists with a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, movies, weight room sessions, and intramural sports.
• Maintains accurate daily attendance records for all assigned activities.
• Upholds order, cleanliness, and equipment control in all recreational areas.
• Serves as a positive role model and promotes strong social and interpersonal skills among students.
• Chaperones off-center trips and maintains accurate attendance documentation.
• Monitors recreational equipment condition and supports the upkeep of first aid supplies.
• Adheres to property control standards, housekeeping expectations, and established safety practices.
• Ensures records accurately reflect student participation in recreational programs.
• Participates in all required staff training sessions.
• Maintains ongoing compliance with all updates, amendments, and guidance outlined in the PRH.
• Comply with all Department of Labor guidelines, PRH requirements, Center policies and procedures, and Cherokee Nation Human Resources policies.


LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
• No supervisory responsibilities required.
• Assignments received in broad terms with timelines and objectives set.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
• No experience required.
• Lifeguard Certification preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
• Must possess a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification or obtain within 180 days of employment and maintain throughout employment.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
• Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for childcare.
