The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and accountability to the states 178 school districts, 1,888 schools, over 53,000 teachers, and over 3,200 administrators to help them build capacity to meet the needs of the states approximately 905,000 public school students. In addition, CDE provides structural and administrative support to the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind and the Charter School Institute.

As the administrative arm of the State Board of Education, CDE is responsible for implementing state and federal education laws, disbursing state and federal funds, holding schools and districts accountable for performance, licensing all educators, and providing public transparency of performance and financial data.

Description of Job

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is part-time, state and federally funded (funding is contingent upon availability and may end at any time), and is eligible for a hybrid work environment.

  • Office hours are typically Mon-Fri, 8 am-5 pm

  • Extended hours during the evening or the weekend may be required by business needs

  • A Remote (Home) office is required

  • Essential Functions (ADAAA)

  • SEDENTARY/Office environment:

  • Required to sit, view a computer screen, and utilize a keyboard and mouse for extended periods of time

  • Required lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, walking, etc.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position extends the capacity of CDE's accountability and continuous improvement work through several accountability functions. The UIP Lead Reviewer supports the Office of Continuous Improvement with reviews of school and district improvement plans. The position works remotely using web-based platforms to review documents and collaborate with CDE staff while meeting quality, programmatic, and statutory expectations.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Unified Improvement Plan (UIP) Review and Feedback

  • Review school and district Unified Improvement Plans and develop clear, evidence-based feedback that meets expectations established by the Office of Continuous Improvement.
  • Apply programmatic, statutory, and quality expectations consistently when evaluating submitted plans and documentation.

Quality Assurance and Reviewer Development

  • Participate in required training, coaching, calibration, and other reviewer-development activities.
  • Track review progress and completion requirements and communicate proactively when issues may affect quality or timelines.
  • Provide editorial or quality-control support, as assigned, to strengthen consistency and quality of UIP feedback.

Continuous Improvement and Collaboration

  • Identify opportunities to improve the review process, reviewer feedback, training, and related supports.
  • Collaborate remotely with CDE staff and reviewers using web-based platforms and shared systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in education or a related field such as the social sector, governance, or policy.
  • Familiarity with state and federal accountability systems and requirements.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with openness to feedback and coaching.
  • Proficiency using web-based platforms, including tools such as Google Drive and Salesforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently problem solve and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to work under pressure, maintain the quality of detailed work, and meet competing deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITIONS:

Preferred Qualifications (Preferred/Not Required):

  • School building- or district-level leadership experience.
  • Coaching or professional development experience with education leaders.
  • Specialized expertise in an education context such as rural, alternative education, charter, or online education.
  • Ability to understand and communicate Colorado's accountability system and related program requirements, including state accountability, ESSA, IDEA, Charter Schools, Innovation Schools, and Online Programs.
  • Ability to listen to and understand program requirements and synthesize them into a coherent, actionable message for the field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with audiences that have varying levels of knowledge of data use and interpretation.
