Casual Staff - Distinguished Research Fellow

Position Summary:      

The Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution is looking for a candidate to begin on July 15th as a part-time Distinguished Research Fellow. The Fellow will work 15 hours a week to help develop a teaching module on communication behaviors (Rackham-based) that can be integrated across multiple law school courses, clinics, and professional training platforms. To disseminate and promote the teaching module throughout the dispute resolution, negotiation, and law school clinical education communities to encourage broad adoption and collaboration and lay the foundation for future interdisciplinary social science research on communication behaviors, including exploring how AI-assisted coding and analysis can reduce research barriers and expand research capacity for scholars.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching Module on Communication Behaviors at Cardozo

• Develop a suite of teaching materials focused on communication behaviors, including experiential exercises, teaching notes, and assessment tools.
• Integrate a negotiation and communication behaviors module into the standard Negotiation syllabus template at Cardozo.
• Incorporate the communication module into Cardozo’s first-year professionalism curriculum.
• Adapt the communication and negotiation module for implementation within Cardozo clinics and experiential programs (beyond negotiation and dispute resolution).

National Dissemination of the Teaching Module

• Publish a teaching note in the Negotiation Journal and/or a law review essay introducing the new communication behaviors module and its pedagogical framework.
• Present the project and its findings at national and interdisciplinary conferences, including venues such as the ABA, IACM, and SEALS.
• Expand visibility and engagement through podcasts, blogs, webinars, and other media platforms serving the dispute resolution and clinical legal education communities.

Design of a Future Social Science Research Agenda

• Build interdisciplinary partnerships with scholars in social science, dispute resolution, and artificial intelligence to better understand emerging approaches to communication coding and behavioral analysis.
• Draw upon and extend prior empirical research by scholars such as Schneider, Ebner, Rackham, and others to create a scalable research design prepared for future AI integration.
• Develop and pilot an initial experimental framework to collect communication data and test methodologies in anticipation of more advanced AI-assisted coding systems.
