    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    Under the direction of the CTE Director and principal, the CTE Career Specialist develops and maintains the career education program at an assigned high school. Major duties of the Career Specialist include but are not limited to student instruction in career and educational planning and job search skills, promotion of career awareness, occupational guidance to individual students, and performing non-instructional duties.

    E = ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Student guidance in college and career planning and job search skills Promotion of career awareness and Career & Technical Education pathways, programs, and classes Coordinate and chaperone Career & Technical Education field trips Assist student leadership organization advisors with group activities, conferences, and competitions Provide classroom instruction to students on the career planning process, post-high school planning, and job search strategies and techniques Design, implement, and evaluate occupational information curriculum; research and provides a variety of relevant materials, statistics, trends, and options for student use Design and develop comprehensive career development programs for assigned schools; work with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and professional colleagues in program planning and implementation, as assigned; develop and conduct in-service training for staff as requested Administer and interpret both standardized and computer-assisted career tests to assist students with career decision-making Develop and maintain a career information resource library of books, files, catalogs, videos, school profiles, scholarships, and other information related to programs offering post-secondary training and education Research, develop, and provide individual students with appropriate career information for formulation of career choices; assist students in developing objectives and strategies for accomplishing them Develop and coordinate a variety of special events to promote occupational information, such as seminars, summits, forums, fairs, and workplace tours; initiate and coordinate opportunities for 2

    career exploration or short-term job shadowing experiences for students in the areas of their occupational choices Maintain liaison with a variety of administrators, counselors, teachers, committees, parents, and the business community on career development issues; determine and integrate career information needs for each instructional area and for the business community Meet with representatives of various post-secondary institutions, the military services, the apprenticeship community, and other institutions and programs offering post-secondary training and education to discuss their programs and requirements and arrange for meetings with students Gather and publicize information from the community regarding career opportunities and available jobs Develop and maintain a resource file and speakers' bureau to meet teacher and student requests for guest speakers. Assist students in the completion of military and apprenticeship applications, program visitations, and scholarship opportunities Attend a variety of meetings, seminars, and workshops; maintain current knowledge of procedures, standards, and legislation governing occupational information Serve as member of the instructional team of the building and district; perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned Communicate regularly with parents in a positive and constructive manner Maintain adequate and careful records as required by the principal and district Perform all other duties as assigned

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Oral and written communication skills, including English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, composition, and skills in mathematics

Write/present in a clear and concise manner for broad public appeal and interpretation Plan, organize, and prioritize work to meet multiple schedules and deadlines, and manage simultaneous tasks, with many interruptions Work independently with appropriate direction and supervision Use effective interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with school and district personnel, parents, and external partners

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in related field Proven successful experience working with youth

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Proven successful experience in an ethnically diverse public school district.

    Licensing and Certification

    None WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Inflexible deadlines and constant interruptions; requires visual concentration to detail, dexterity, and precision. Required to sit for prolonged periods of times, standing, walking, carrying, filing, hearing, speaking, writing, keyboarding, extended periods of time in front of a computer monitor, and exposure to angry or frustrated individuals.
