Beacon Breaks Ground on New Memorial Hospital Patient Tower

In October 2022, Beacon Health System leaders broke ground on the new 10-story patient care tower on the campus of Memorial Hospital of South Bend. This transformational, once-in-a-generation project is designed to enrich the patient, family and visitor experience while meeting the growing healthcare needs of residents in our area for decades to come.

Summary

Reports to Director. Observes telemetry monitors and recognizes arrhythmias. Prioritizes and transcribes doctor/nursing orders accurately and in a timely manner. Provides safe patient environment. Exhibits exceptional patient experience by upholding Beacon values of respect, trust, integrity and compassion. Functions within the relationship based care nursing model. Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department:

  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Receives patient feedback via call backs, leader rounds, or surveys.

Leadership:

  • Accepts accountability and responsibility to address issues and conflicts. Follows up with unit director as needed.
  • Acts as a role model and precepts new associates as requested.

Teamwork:

  • Communicate, collaborate, and function with other members of the health team.
  • Informs patient nurse immediately of any changes in monitor patterns, life threatening arrhythmias, visual picture.
  • Inform resource nurse for remotely monitored units of arrhythmias occurring on remotely monitored units.
  • Read back and verify patient name, room, and telemetry box number.
  • Gives accurate shift report.
  • Follows TeamSTEPPS principles including participation in shift briefs, debriefs, and huddles to improve communication, patient care, and teamwork.
  • Relays accurate pertinent information to nurse, physicians, director, and other departments in a timely manner.
  • Verifies correct patient through read back and verify patient name, date of birth, room # and telemetry box #.
  • Responds promptly to patient, family and staff needs. Assists in emergency situations as directed.
  • Fosters a sense of trust and collaboration among team members and other departments.

Professional Practice:

  • Takes ownership and pride in their job.
  • Respect the dignity and rights of the patient regardless of socioeconomic status, personal attributes or nature of health problem.
  • Maintain each patient''s right to privacy by protecting confidential information.

Supply Inventory/Unit Maintenance:

  • Monitors stock supplies and materials, and reports shortages.
  • Keeps the patient rooms and department areas neat and orderly.
  • Performs QA checks as directed.
  • Performs daily check of external pacemaker and supplies.

Resource Driven Practice:

  • Seek education and supervision as necessary.
  • Participates in councils, committees, and process improvement activities.
  • Has regular and prompt attendance.

Monitor Room Activities:

  • Runs and interprets rhythm strips in an accurate and timely manner at prescribed intervals and as needed with changes.
  • Maintains alarm settings at a level required for patient safety.
  • Processes telemetry monitoring and procedure charges in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Cleans and stores monitors and leads appropriately.
  • Updates and maintains telemetry tracking data base.
  • Documentation in monitor log accurately reflects patient rhythm and nurse communication throughout the shift.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age. Must have passing score on basic dysrhythmia test upon hire or before completion of orientation. Must successfully complete periodic dysrhythmia exams with a minimum score of 80% and get all lethal rhythms correct. Medical terminology required. Current CPR certification is required.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Current knowledge of basic cardiac dysrhythmia.
  • Identifies and communicates abnormal EKG patterns.
  • Reassuring and attentive personality characteristics.
  • Must successfully complete periodic dysrhythmia exams with a minimum score of 80% and get all lethal rhythms correct.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
  • Works closely and well with co-workers.
  • Focuses on duties in spite of distractions and pressure.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
