    Under general supervision of the Supervisor or Team Leader, Patient Access, the Cancer Institute (CI) Oncology Scheduling Coordinator 1 serves as a primary point of contact for patients and clinical partners, delivering high-quality access services through inbound and outbound calls, while exercising advanced judgment to accurately gather, validate, and document demographic, clinical, and financial information required to create and maintain hospital accounts. Responsible for registration, scheduling, insurance eligibility and benefit verification, identification of services requiring prior authorization, and clear communication of patient financial responsibility, including copays and deductibles. Proficiently explains required consent and financial forms, ensures compliance with CMS, Joint Commission (JCAHO), and HIPAA regulations. Collaborates with clinical staff, ancillary departments, insurance carriers, and external partners to facilitate timely access to care. All duties are performed in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, service excellence, and patient experience.

    Essential Functions:

    • Perform all core functions of the Patient Access Specialist (PAS) role with expanded responsibility for complex and specialized services. Independently schedule advanced procedures and treatments, including infusion and other high complexity services, ensuring clinical readiness and payer requirements are met.
    • Serve as a subject-matter expert for complex access workflows, insurance rules, and authorization processes.
    • Proctor, coach, and support peers by answering questions, modeling best practices, and assisting with onboarding or cross-training as assigned.
    • Identify and resolve complex access, registration, and coverage issues, escalating appropriately when necessary.
    • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients regarding scheduling details, preparation instructions, and financial expectations.
    • Collaborate with nursing staff, providers, ancillary departments, insurance carriers, and external partners to resolve access, coverage, and scheduling issues.
    • Ensure accurate documentation and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to access workflows, patient experience and operational efficiency.
    • Perform all duties in alignment with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.
