Empower Second Chances Through Hands-On HVAC Training

Our Campus Within Walls program is an important facet of Southside Virginia Community College's mission. We believe that all citizens should have educational opportunities and that includes incarcerated people in our service region. The goal of this program is to educate college-ready inmates, providing them with the opportunity to attain associate's degrees and certificates while incarcerated. The result of this education is improvement of their chances for successful re-entry into society and the acquisition of meaningful employment.

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) is seeking a qualified and dedicated Adjunct HVAC Instructor to join the Campus Within Walls program. This position provides instruction to incarcerated students at Brunswick Community Corrections Adult Program (CCAP), preparing students with the technical knowledge and hands-on skills necessary for employment in the HVAC industry. The successful candidate will foster an engaging learning environment that promotes student success, workforce readiness, and personal growth.

The instructor will present instruction in the fundamental concepts of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration and how they apply to Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Applications, alongside completing credentials in NCCER and EPA Section 608.

  • Submission of the online application should also include a resume and certifications/transcripts of all college/trades work completed, or it may not be reviewed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration (HVAC/R), Industrial Maintenance, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and industry experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of residential and commercial HVAC systems
  • Minimum of three years of recent HVAC industry experience
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
  • Ability to successfully complete all required background checks and security clearances for working within a correctional facility
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous teaching or training experience at the secondary, postsecondary, apprenticeship, or workforce level
  • HVAC industry certifications (EPA Section 608 Certification, NATE, HVAC Excellence, or other relevant credentials)
  • Experience working with adult learners or nontraditional student populations
  • Familiarity with the Virginia Community College System
