Campus Police Officer (Part-Time)

Position Information

Bismarck State College is seeking a dedicated and proactive Part-Time Campus Police Officer to join our team. Campus Police Officers are responsible for maintaining a visible law enforcement presence on college property through conscientious vehicle and foot patrol operations. This position is considered essential personnel and involves active participation in all phases of Community Oriented Policing. Campus Police Officers will also assist the Campus Police Chief in ensuring compliance with federal mandates and perform other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct conscientious vehicle and foot patrols to ensure the safety and security of college property.
• Actively participate in all phases of Community Oriented Policing to foster positive relationships within the college community.
• Assist the Campus Police Chief in compliance with federal mandates and other assigned duties.
• Ensure a visible and approachable presence to address concerns and maintain a safe environment.
• Engage with students, faculty, and staff to promote a sense of security and community.
• Respond to emergencies, incidents, and requests for assistance promptly and effectively.
• Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies as necessary.

• Continuously - 66-100% - Use hands dexterously, talk or hear. Writing, discriminating colors, remembering details, examining/observing details, and concentrating amid distractions. Working in various environmental conditions - inside and outside.
• Frequently - 34-65% - Stand, walk, or sit. Directing others, using math, remembering names, and making decisions.
• Occasionally - 1-33% - Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop/kneel/crouch, or crawl, push/pull, lift to 50 pounds, and work with hazards.
• Continuously sitting or standing for 8-10 hours Up to 10 days per month.
• Frequently exposed to hazardous situations that might include crowd management, chemical spills, the first responder to accidents or emergencies, and the exposure to bloodborne pathogens 10 minutes - 10 hours Up to 10 days per month
• Frequently perform many work duties in inclement weather 6-8 hours Up to 4 days per month,
• Occasionally moving heavy objects i.e., push a car out of the roadway 5 minutes Up to 2 times per month
• Occasionally lift heavy objects 5 minutes Up to 2 times per month
• Occasionally exposed to loud noise, firing range, siren, and alarms for 2-4 hours Up to 2-3 times per month

Minimum Requirements

• Must have successfully completed a law enforcement academy and meet one of the following requirements:

• Currently hold an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license or

• Have maintained inactive POST status and remain eligible for licensure upon hire.

• Completed an associate degree (or 60 semester hours of college credit) with a GPA of 2.0 or better from an accredited college or university validated by transcripts OR

• Three (3) years of full-time military experience OR

• Three (3) years of full-time experience as a licensed Peace Officer

OR

• Three (3) years as a full-time Correctional Officer.

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

• Successful completion of the pre-interview and interview process, reference checks, required to pass a physical and psychological exam, drug screen, and standard background and criminal record checks to determine knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform Campus Police Officer duties and responsibilities.

Work Schedule Requirements-Part-Time Officer Program

• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the needs of the department and the community.
• Commit to working a minimum of 1 patrol shift per month.
• Exceptions to this minimal work requirement include military service requirements, medical concerns, and other unforeseen, explainable circumstances.
• Participate in comprehensive in-service police training to maintain ND POST Board requirements

Purpose and Nature of Work Relationships

You will encounter members of the campus and community to investigate complaints, make arrests, write citations, and assist in a variety of ways, such as escorts, motorist assistance, building/room unlocks, and will interact with a variety of people in a variety of emotional states, including those in crisis, the riate, and the victimized.

Physical Skills & Abilities Required:

• Ability to operate a cell phone, two-way radio, personal computer, telephone, and copier. In addition, must be able to operate standard police vehicles, and safety equipment, including firearms, chemical agents, handcuffs, flashlights, and duty belts.
• May be involved in physical confrontations requiring the use of force from passive restraint up to and including deadly force. Other physical demands require good aerobic conditioning, and in some cases, heavy lifting.
• Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts to include weekends and nights.
• Must be able to perform law enforcement duties and emergency-related duties in various environments (indoor, outdoor, inclement weather, and other adverse conditions).

Preferred Qualifications

• More than two years of law enforcement experience.

• CPR and first aid certification.

• Experience working in a higher education environment.
