    About This Role

We are seeking a California Behavioral Health Subject Matter Expert (SME) to advise on strategy, operational readiness, and funding models for a leading nonprofit behavioral health provider. This role will leverage deep knowledge of Medi-Cal behavioral health programs, CalAIM initiatives, and county behavioral health dynamics to guide payer diversification strategies, compliance readiness, and strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate combines subject matter depth with the ability to communicate practical, actionable insights to senior leadership and boards.

This engagement is fractional and will include proposal shaping, Phase 1 validation, payer strategy input, and participation in key client meetings. Additional analysis and advisory work may follow pending client approval.

    What You Will Work On

    • Provide strategic and operational expertise on California behavioral health systems, including Medi-Cal specialty mental health, Drug Medi-Cal, and CalAIM.
    • Assess nonprofit behavioral health organizations' readiness for payer diversification, ECM, and Community Supports participation.
    • Advise on compliance and regulatory alignment with DHCS and MCP standards.
    • Support operating model evaluation to determine capabilities required for sustainability and scale (workforce, infrastructure, reimbursement controls).
    • Contribute to board-level discussions by translating technical behavioral health and payer issues into clear strategic recommendations.
    • Identify mission-aligned growth opportunities and risks of payer diversification (mission drift, staffing, financial implications).

    What You Will Bring

    • 10+ years' experience in California behavioral health environments (county systems, Medi-Cal managed care, nonprofit providers, or related consulting).
    • Proven expertise with CalAIM, ECM, and Community Supports, including contracting readiness and policy compliance.
    • Strong knowledge of behavioral health regulatory frameworks, funding streams, and operating models in California.
    • Ability to partner with executives and boards on strategic decisions with clarity and confidence.
    • Background in program design, operational readiness, and workforce integration for behavioral health services.
    • High credibility advising both clinical and business leadership teams.

    What You Can Expect

    • An inspirational place for you to do your best work, be engaged in meaningful ways, and continually develop the skills, competencies and qualities that set our team apart.
    • Compensation commensurate with your qualifications, experience, and other factors including geographic location, market and operational factors.
    • Total Rewards include: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, 401(k) Savings Plan, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Professional Development Program, Paid Time Off and Paid Sick Time (in geographies where legally required).
