National Calibration is a family-owned, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration laboratory serving customers throughout the Southwestern United States since 1955.

We are looking for a skilled, detail-oriented Calibration / Metrology Technician specializing in surface plate calibration and resurfacing to join our growing team.

This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in precision workmanship, enjoys hands-on technical challenges, and understands the importance of accuracy in measurement.

You'll work with specialized metrology equipment to inspect, calibrate, and restore precision surface plates, helping our customers maintain the accuracy and reliability of their measurement systems.

What You'll Do

As a Surface Plate Specialist, you'll be responsible for:

• Surface Plate Calibration: Inspect, clean, map, and calibrate granite surface plates to verify flatness and repeatability.
• Surface Plate Resurfacing: Perform precision hand-lapping and reconditioning of worn surface plates to restore accuracy and meet applicable grade specifications.
• Precision Measurement: Operate specialized metrology equipment, including electronic levels, autocollimators, repeat reading gauges, and other precision instruments.
• Technical Evaluation: Apply established inspection methods, including Union Jack, Moody, and perimeter-based patterns, to evaluate surface plate geometry.
• Dimensional Calibration: Perform calibration of related dimensional equipment, including height gauges, gauge blocks, master squares, straightedges, and micrometers.
• Quality & Documentation: Maintain accurate calibration records, measurement data, and certificates in accordance with established quality procedures and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
• Customer Service: Perform calibration services both in our laboratory and at customer facilities while maintaining a professional, customer-focused approach.

Required Qualifications

• Previous hands-on experience in precision measurement, dimensional calibration, or related industrial metrology work.
• Experience inspecting, calibrating, or resurfacing precision surface plates.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
• Ability to interpret technical specifications, measurement results, and calibration tolerances.
• Good mathematical and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining consistent quality standards.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate technical documentation.
• Willingness to travel locally to customer facilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of experience in industrial calibration or metrology.
• Experience with precision hand-lapping and surface plate reconditioning.
• Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 quality requirements.
• Experience using electronic levels, autocollimators, and repeat reading gauges.
• PMEL training or equivalent formal metrology education.

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on technical position that requires the ability to:

• Stand and work at calibration stations for extended periods.
• Perform repetitive precision hand movements associated with surface plate inspection and lapping.
• Safely handle and position calibration equipment and accessories.
• Bend, reach, and move around large measurement surfaces.
• Lift and move equipment with appropriate assistance or material-handling devices when necessary.
