This position assists the Cage Wash Supervisor in coordinating daily cage wash and sanitation operations within an animal research facility. The incumbent provides hands-on leadership, assigns work, trains staff, monitors quality and documentation, and serves as acting supervisor when assigned.
1. Daily staffing, shift assignments, workflow priorities, and coverage to ensure operational requirements are met.
2. Provide day-to-day direction, coaching, and technical guidance to Cage Wash Technicians; reinforce standard operating procedures, safety requirements, PPE use, biosecurity practices, and quality standards.
3. Serve as acting supervisor during the supervisor's absence or as assigned, and promptly escalate staffing, safety, equipment, performance, or service concerns.
4. Coordinate the collection, transport, staging, washing, sanitizing, autoclaving (as applicable), storage, and distribution of caging, racks, bottles, enrichment devices, and related equipment.
5. Operate and inspect cage and rack washers, tunnel washers, bottle washers, bedding systems, autoclaves, and other facility equipment; monitor cycles, temperatures, chemical levels, and operating conditions and report malfunctions.
6. Inspect cleaned equipment and assigned areas for quality and compliance, correct deficiencies, and document corrective actions when necessary.
7. Ensure the timely cleaning and sanitization of hallways, feed rooms, animal holding rooms, PPE cabinets, entrances, restrooms, mop closets, elevators, and other assigned support areas.
8. Monitor inventories of PPE, detergents, disinfectants, bedding, and operational supplies and communicate replenishment needs before shortages occur.
9. Complete and review sanitation schedules, equipment logs, chemical records, training documentation, work orders, and other required records for accuracy and timeliness.
10. Support employee onboarding, task qualification, and competency assessment and communicate training needs to the supervisor.
11. Promote safe chemical handling, proper waste disposal, ergonomic work practices, exposure controls, and compliance with Safety Data Sheet requirements.
12. Coordinate with animal care, veterinary, facility, and research support personnel and support inspections, audits, incident reviews, and corrective or preventive actions.
13. Perform hands-on cage wash and sanitation duties as operational needs require and complete other duties as assigned.
• Provides functional direction and work coordination for Cage Wash Technicians and other assigned personnel while promoting a respectful, accountable, and safety-focused work environment.
• Assists with training, performance feedback, attendance monitoring, and documentation; formal employment actions remain subject to management and Human Resources approval.
1. High school diploma or equivalent at time of hire.
2. Two years of cage wash, animal facility sanitation, custodial, sterile processing, industrial laundry, or comparable operations experience; prior lead or supervisory experience is preferred.
3. Experience operating industrial washing, sanitation, autoclave, or related material-handling equipment is preferred.
4. Knowledge of cleaning and disinfection practices, PPE, chemical safety, contamination control, and safe handling of soiled equipment.
5. Ability to train and direct employees, organize competing priorities, resolve routine workflow issues, and communicate effectively with staff and customers.
6. Ability to read and follow SOPs, chemical labels, Safety Data Sheets, work instructions, and equipment manuals; basic computer skills and accurate recordkeeping are required.
7. AALAS certification (ALAT or higher) is preferred but not required.
8. Candidate must be cleared fit for duty through an employment health physical and must pass a social media background check.
9. Candidate MUST pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
1. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; maneuver loaded carts, racks, and equipment; and stand or walk for extended periods.
2. Ability to frequently bend, reach, stoop, twist, and perform repetitive tasks in hot, humid, wet, noisy, and physically demanding environments while wearing required PPE.
3. Ability to work around research animals, animal allergens, disinfectants, cleaning chemicals, soiled caging, and biological waste.
4. Ability to work the schedule required by site operations, which may include weekends, holidays, overtime, or emergency coverage.
