Description

Performs cafeteria worker assignments in a school cafeteria including assembling sandwiches, serving on a meal line, washing pots and pans, heating prepared foods, and computer point-of-sale operation.

Only current permanent employees in the Classified service of the Glendale Unified School District qualify to apply.

CURRENT VACANCIES: Three (3) part-time positions:

  • Daily High School (5 hrs./day, 9.25 mos./yr.)
  • Hoover High School (6.5 hrs./day, 9.25 mos./yr.)
  • Pacific Avenue Education Center (PAEC). (5.5 hrs./day, 12 mos./yr.)

Part-time benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for the employee only.

Sets up serving line according to daily menu.

Washes and cuts foodstuffs for cooking.

Assembles salads and sandwiches.

Replenishes food on serving line.

Heats prepared food.

Prepares cash for deposit.

Operates a point-of-sale computer terminal.

Maintains site lists of students enrolled in food service programs.

Prepares sales reports.

Cleans up after meals, cleans counters and equipment, and washes pots and pans.

Performs related duties, as assigned.

Employment Standards

Minimum Requirements:

Six months of experience in a quantity food service operation.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Also, ability to be insured at

standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability.

Desirable:

Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

CONTINUING EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Each year, at least 6 hours of annual continuing education/training including topics such as:

Free and reduced price eligibility.

Application certification and verification procedures.

The identification of reimbursable meals at the point of service.

Nutrition, health, and safety standards.

Any specific topics required by the USDA, Food Nutrition Services as needed to address program integrity or other critical issues.

The required continuing education/training will be paid for by the district.

CLASS QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

General food preparation practices and procedures.

Kitchen utensils and equipment.

Basic math and simple keyboard skills needed to operate a point-of-sale computer terminal.

Ability to:

Wash, heat, cut, and assemble foods and ingredients.

Follow applicable health and sanitation requirements.

Present a positive image of the food service program on a school campus.

Perform work efficiently during rush conditions.

Follow oral and written instructions.

Operate a point-of-sale computer terminal.

Work cooperatively with others.

Work without direct supervision.

Lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Benefits for permanent employees who work 4 or more hours per day include medical, dental, vision and life insurance.

Salary: The beginning and ending salary steps are shown on each examination announcement. Permanent employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.

Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.

Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.

Retirement: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

Examination Process: A review of the applicants experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.

Eligibility List: Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.

Classification: When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.

Fingerprint Requirement: California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.

Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination: New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.

Accommodation: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application.

Physical Examination: Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others. As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination. Tests must be given by a District-approved physician.

Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432): As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.
