Business Automation & Integration Lead
Location: Greenville, South Carolina
Reports To: Director of Operations
Travel: Occasional travel between company offices
Position Summary
Bunnell Lammons Engineering is seeking a hands-on Business Automation & Integration Lead to improve operational efficiency through process improvement, custom application development, system integration, automation, and practical application of the company's internal AI platform.
Working across departments and with employees at all levels, this individual will analyze existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement, design more efficient workflows, and implement reliable, scalable solutions. The role requires someone equally comfortable working with employees to understand their challenges, independently developing technical solutions, and training others to use them.
This is an execution-focused position responsible for improving how existing business systems are used and connected—not owning or governing those systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Business Process Improvement
- Work with department managers and employees across finance, engineering, field operations, fleet, document management, HR, and administration to map processes, identify inefficiencies, and develop practical improvements.
- Eliminate unnecessary steps, simplify and standardize workflows, and evaluate existing software capabilities and configuration options before recommending automation or custom development.
- Identify and prioritize improvement initiatives with department managers and leadership based on business impact, cost, complexity, reliability, and long-term support requirements.
- Improve processes involving project setup and closeout, reporting, approvals, notifications, task routing, and document management.
- Help develop and implement consistent file structures, naming conventions, and document management standards in collaboration with departments and system owners.
- Measure improvements in efficiency, accuracy, employee adoption, and time savings.
2. Automation, Integration & Data Reliability
- Design, develop, test, deploy, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain automated workflows and system integrations using Microsoft Power Platform, APIs, middleware, data pipelines, and other appropriate technologies.
- Design, develop, deploy, and maintain custom business applications and tools to address operational needs that cannot be effectively met through existing software.
- Develop solutions ranging from simple internal applications and data entry interfaces to more complex tools that improve workflows, reporting, data management, and operational efficiency.
- Connect existing business platforms to reduce duplicate data entry, eliminate manual handoffs, and establish reliable data flows and clear sources of truth.
- Identify and correct data inconsistencies across connected systems as part of integration and process improvement initiatives.
- Recommend practical, cost-effective solutions that balance functionality, complexity, reliability, and ongoing maintenance.
- Follow sound development practices, including testing, version control, change documentation, controlled deployment, error handling, monitoring, and recovery procedures.
- Coordinate with IT, system owners, and vendors to ensure integrations meet company requirements for security, data privacy, access controls, authentication, and protection of sensitive information.
3. AI Workflow Development & Enablement
- Identify and implement practical, repeatable AI applications using the company's internal AI platform and other appropriate technologies.
- Develop AI-assisted workflows incorporating document processing, information extraction, analysis, and automated actions within existing business processes.
- Incorporate appropriate testing, validation, and human review to ensure reliable outputs and support informed human decision-making.
- Collaborate with departments to test, refine, and implement AI-enabled solutions, tracking adoption and measurable business impact.
4. Training, Documentation & Employee Adoption
- Plan and lead employee training sessions, workshops, and demonstrations for new processes, automated workflows, system integrations, custom applications, and AI-enabled tools.
- Create instructional videos, screen recordings, user guides, standard operating procedures, and other practical training materials tailored to employees with varying technical abilities.
- Develop and maintain a centralized collection of training resources, technical documentation, integration configurations, data flows, and troubleshooting guides.
- Document solutions so designated employees can provide basic support, troubleshoot common problems, and maintain continuity without relying solely on the original developer.
- Work with employees and department managers to support adoption, gather feedback, and refine solutions to improve usability and effectiveness.
5. Project Implementation & Continuous Improvement
- Manage improvement initiatives from process discovery and requirements gathering through solution development, testing, deployment, training, and ongoing refinement.
- Involve end users throughout solution design and testing to ensure improvements are practical, intuitive, and effective.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external vendors, communicating priorities, progress, risks, decisions, and expected outcomes.
- Independently manage multiple initiatives, navigate incomplete requirements, and proactively identify solutions through effective questioning and problem-solving.
- Evaluate implemented solutions against operational objectives and continuously improve their performance, reliability, and business value.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, engineering, business technology, or a related field; equivalent practical experience accepted.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in business process automation, systems integration, business applications development, or similar work.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, or Power BI) and proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or similar).
- Experience developing and deploying custom business applications using low-code platforms, traditional programming languages, or a combination of both.
- Experience with APIs, data structures, system integrations, workflow automation, and troubleshooting data inconsistencies.
- Practical experience applying AI tools to business processes and developing reliable, repeatable solutions.
- Experience analyzing, mapping, documenting, and improving business processes while independently delivering technical solutions.
- Understanding of software testing, version control, error handling, solution maintenance, data security, and access controls.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently with incomplete requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders, explain technical concepts clearly, and lead employee training sessions and presentations.
- Experience producing instructional videos, user guides, technical documentation, and training materials.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in engineering services, environmental consulting, construction, field operations, or similar industries.
- Familiarity with ERP, LIMS, fleet, project management, document management, or financial systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, SQL, relational databases, ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, or middleware.
- Experience with Microsoft Copilot Studio, AI agents, Microsoft 365 integrations (SharePoint, Teams), or related technologies.
- Experience with Git or comparable version control tools and software deployment practices.
- Experience implementing automation across multiple departments or locations, supporting employee adoption, and establishing reliable monitoring and support procedures.
What You Are Walking Into
Bunnell Lammons Engineering has approximately 250 employees across five locations, with multiple business systems supporting engineering, finance, operations, fleet, and document management. Processes vary across departments and offices, and dedicated automation capacity is currently limited.
The company has strong executive support for practical AI adoption and operational improvement. This position offers an opportunity to work directly with employees and leadership, identify meaningful improvements, and implement solutions that produce measurable results.
What This Role Is Not
This is not a help desk, IT infrastructure, business systems ownership, or governance position. It is not responsible for independently enforcing company standards or managing the underlying business platforms.
It is also not a strategy-only, consulting, or isolated software development position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly with employees, navigating incomplete requirements, developing solutions, and following through with implementation, documentation, training, and ongoing support.
Why This Role Matters
Manual work, disconnected systems, inconsistent processes, and unreliable data create unnecessary cost and delay. This position will help Bunnell Lammons Engineering operate more efficiently by simplifying workflows, integrating systems, developing custom business applications, and implementing practical automation and AI solutions.
Success will be measured by operational improvements, employee adoption, reliability, and the long-term value of implemented solutions—not simply the number of automations developed.
