    Job Title: Bus Operator Trainee Salary Grade: Time Worked FLSA Status: Non Exempt, Time‐Worked Department: Transportation Department Reports To: Transportation Manager

    SUMMARY: This position is a limited duration training position in which the incumbent is taught the knowledge and skills necessary to become a St. Charles Parish Public Schools Parish Bus Operator. A cleared criminal background check and driving record is required upon hire. Within four weeks of entering the training program, incumbent must either 1) become qualified and be hired into a fulltime parish bus operator for the 2021‐2022 school year, or 2) be declared not qualified and employment terminated. After successful completion of the training, an incumbent will know how to transport, safely and expediently, students to and from home, between schools and on district sponsored trips. Monitors students at designated crossings to ensure students have safe passage.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Learns how to advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety.

    Learns how to assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (e.g. road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation.

    Learns how to assist students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.

    Learns how to inspect vehicle's interior and exterior (e.g. equipment, instruments, safety devices, proper operation, fuel, engine oil, coolant, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle in accordance with federal, state and local lawsuit, regulations, policies and guidelines.

    Learns how to maintain complete control of the vehicle at all times and remains alert for the purpose of ensuring the safety of passengers.

    Learns how to monitor students and other passengers during transit for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.

    Learns how to prepare reports (e.g. field trips reports, incident reports, inspections records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines.

    Learns how to report emergencies, breakdowns, delays and/or accidents to the Transportation Manager or designee for the purpose of ensuring prompt response to emergencies and the safety and care of passengers.

    Learns how to respond to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services. TR‐1 Revised: 7/2017

    Learns how to supervise bus monitors during the loading and unl oading of passengers with attention to a variety of details (e.g. wheelchairs, ramps, curbs, inside bus, safety devices, car seats, lap belts, T‐ straps, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety of immobilized passengers.

    Performs bus monitor duties when not participating in bus operator trainee role for the purpose of providing additional support to students and learning all facets of bus operations.

    Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; operating district vehicles, fire extinguisher, two‐way radio, and standard office equipment; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

    KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: emergency evacuation techniques; area streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; health standards and hazards; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; safe driving practices; safety practices and procedures; two way radio communication; and utilizing wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc. (by assignment).

    ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use job‐ related equipment.     Work Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

    Education and Training - High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience - Job related experience is required.
