Job Description - Bus Driver - Class A Band Equipment Driver
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of band equipment, instruments, supplies, and other authorized materials to and from schools, performances, competitions, events, and designated locations. Operates district vehicles, including Class A commercial motor vehicles and trailers, in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulati ons. Performs loading, unloading, securing, and delivery of equipment and materials as required.
Responsibilities/Duties: Operates assigned Class A commercial motor vehicles and trailers in transporting band equipment, instruments, supplies, and other authorized district property in a safe and timely manner Maintains a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all required endorsements and medical certification, as applicable Complies with all applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrat ion (FMCSA), Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Education Agency, and other local, state, and federal requirements pertaining to the operation of commercial motor vehicles Is willing and able to submit to substance abuse and alcohol misuse testing as prescribed by district policy and applicable law Maintains a satisfactory driving and criminal background that reflects a professional driver and meets all applicable local, state, and federal requirements Properly loads, unloads, organizes, and secures b and equipment, instruments, supplies, and other materials to prevent damage, shifting, or loss during transportation Uses appropriate tie -downs, straps, chains, covers, ramps, lift -gate equipment, dollies, carts, and other material-handling equipment as required Inspects all equipment, trailers, cargo securement devices, and vehicles before, during, and after trips and reports deficiencies or safety concerns immediately Completes required vehicle inspection reports, trip documentation, mileage records, fuel records, cargo documentation, and other transportation forms accurately and timely Operates vehicles and trailers in a safe and responsible manner, including appropriate backing, parking, turning, loading, unloading, and maneuvering procedures Properly cares for assigned vehicles, trailers, and equipment as prescribed by the district to minimize wear and extend useful life Keeps assigned vehicles and equipment clean, orderly, and ready for use Fuels assigned vehicles in accordance with district procedures and maintains accurate fuel documentation Maintains and follows assigned trip schedules, routes, destination information, and transportation instructions; immediately notifies the appropriate supervisor of delays, changes, mechanical concerns, or other issues affecting a scheduled trip Provides safe and timely transportation of band equipment and materials for performances, competitions, rehearsals, field trips, special events, and other district-approved activities May operate vehicles during mid-day, after hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight trips as required by the district's band and activity schedule
Assists with the coordination of equipment movement at loading and unloading locations and works cooperatively with band directors, staff, event personnel, and other district employees Exercises care in handling instruments, musical equipment, electronics, uniforms, supplies, and other district property to minimize damage or loss Maintains accountability for district property and promptly repo rts damaged, missing, or lost equipment or materials Controls fuel charges and required documentation for long -distance and overnight trips and submits documentation in accordance with district procedures Controls emergency situations in a proper and professional manner and follows established emergency procedures Maintains awareness of vehicle height, width, length, weight, turning radius, clearance requirements, and trailer characteristics when operating commercial vehicles and trailers Demonstrates profi ciency in coupling and uncoupling trailers and in performing required trailer inspections Successfully completes required driving skills evaluations and other applicable assessments Attends all required in -service, safety meetings, driver meetings, professional development, and other required training Maintains required CDL qualifications, certifications, training, and documentation Complies with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the operation and maintenance of commercial motor vehicles Conducts work in a manner consistent with the Texas Hazard Communication Act and applicable district safety procedures Follows appropriate procedures for handling, transporting, and storing materials, equipment, and supplies Complies with the use of devices, technology, and software designed for the safety, communication, tracking, scheduling, and operation of district vehicles Maintains a presentable appearance that includes being properly dressed according to district standards, neat grooming, and good hygiene Maintains good work habits through punctuality, regular attendance, dependability, and timely completion of assigned duties Maintains a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, band directors, campus staff, event personnel, and other district personnel, always promoting district goodwill
Supervisory Responsibilities May provide direction or assistance to individuals involved in the loading, unloading, movement, and securing of band equipment and materials No responsibility for supervising or transporting students

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of: Texas motor vehicle and commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations applicable to assigned duties Safe operation of Class A commercial motor vehicles and trailers Vehicle inspection and cargo securement procedures Proper loading, unloading, lifting, moving, and securing of equipment and materials Basic vehicle and trailer maintenance and safety practices Safe backing, parking, maneuvering, and operation of commercial vehicles Oral and written communication skills Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy Operation of computers, mobile devices, radios, tablets, and assigned transportation software Ability to: Operate Class A commercial motor vehicles and trailers safely and efficiently Read and interpret maps, routes, schedules, trip instructions, vehicle information, and other transportation-related documents Safely load, unload, move, and secure band equipment, instruments, supplies, and other materials Properly inspect vehicles, trailers, tires, brakes, lights, cargo securement devices, an d other safety equipment Identify and report mechanical, safety, or equipment concerns Safely couple and uncouple trailers and perform required inspections Follow verbal and written directions Work independently with little direction Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Operate computers and electronic devices, including but not limited to tablets, phones, radios, GPS/navigation systems, and transportation software Maintain confidentiality Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others Maintain regular and consistent attendance Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action Respond appropriately and safely to emergency situations Meet schedules and timelines Plan and organize work Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation Work effectively under changing schedules, weather conditions, traffic conditions, and other operational circumstances
Education/Licenses/Experience: Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and mainta in a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all required endorsements and qualifications applicable to the assigned vehicle and duties. Must meet all applicable federal and state requirements for operating a commercial motor vehicle, including medical certification and drug and alcohol testing requirements, as applicable. Must have an acceptable driving record according to district standards and applicable state and federal requirements. Successful completion of all required district, st ate, and federal commercial driver training and safety requirements. Experience operating Class A commercial vehicles and/or transporting equipment is preferred. Experience with trailer operation, cargo securement, loading/unloading, or equipment transportation is preferred.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Lifting/carrying equipment and materials; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, and repetitive hand motions; ability to safely enter and exit commercial vehicles and trailers; ability to secure and release cargo; ability to operate v ehicle controls for extended periods; exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic, noise, dust, and other environmental conditions associated with vehicle operation and equipment loading/unloading; occasional district -wide, state -wide, and out -of-state travel; work may include irregular hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, overnight trips, and prolonged hours.
