Job Summary Position 447

Job Description Under general supervision to safely drive a school bus or transportation vehicle over an assigned route in the transportation of students to apply safe-driving principles in vehicle operation to maintain buses in a clean and safe condition and perform minor bus maintenance and to do other related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over an assigned route in accordance with a time schedule
  • Boards and discharges student passengers
  • Assists in loading and unloading of pupils and equipment
  • Transports the students, staff, and chaperones on special trips and field trips
  • Enforces District policies and procedures and maintains discipline on buses
  • Prepares daily reports of mileage, time, and student loads
  • Maintains bus cleanliness on a daily basis
  • Performs minor bus maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs
  • Fuels buses
  • Renders first aid or emergency assistance as needed
  • May transport other materials in District vehicles during times when buses are not in use
  • Positions in this class may be assigned to general maintenance and clean-up activities in the transportation department
  • Also may be assigned to pick-up and deliver mail; with this assignment, the driver will pick-up and deliver mail to schools, mail packages, and film, receive shipment of supplies and materials, and deliver to school and central office
  • Keeps records, loads, and unloads surplus materials

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
  • A work history demonstrating dependability and reliability
  • Good driving record
  • Must be able to qualify for District insurance coverage
  • Some experience in the operation of heavy vehicles

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Safe driving practices
  • The provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of a vehicle in the transportation of students

ABILITY TO

  • Drive a school bus or vehicle safely over a variety of normal and hazardous road conditions
  • Maintain order among students on a bus
  • Make simple reports
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, the public, and staff members

LICENSES

  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License Class B
  • Valid California School Bus Drivers certificate
  • First Aid certificate issued by the American Red Cross or the California Highway Patrol
  • Valid medical certificate approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions that apply to all job classifications listed above. While performing the duties of a driver, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Use hands, fingers, and arms to reach and feel
  • See to read a variety of materials
  • Frequent hearing and speaking to exchange information
  • Frequent sitting for driving
  • Climbing in and out of a vehicle and stairs of buildings
  • Sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling heavy objects
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching
  • Reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally
  • Proper lifting techniques
  • Use of hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
  • Walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and on occasion lift and/or move with the assistance up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Requirements Qualifications Bus Drivers transporting students for the Shasta Union High School District must meet the following qualifications:

  • Valid CA Motor Vehicle Operators License Class B
  • Valid CA School Bus Driver Certificate
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Resume
