Definition

Under direction, is responsible for supervising a crew and participating in a wide variety of maintenance duties both in and out of buildings; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

  • Supervises a group of employees engaged in building maintenance work, to include performance appraisals, leave requests, and initiating disciplinary recommendations;
  • Participates in all phases of building maintenance work including, but not limited to, heating and air conditioning, masonry, carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, roofing, pool maintenance, and locksmith work;
  • Determines proper tools, equipment, supplies, and materials for building maintenance and instructs maintenance workers as to the appropriate use;
  • Schedules, assigns, and monitors park maintenance;
  • Assigns maintenance workers to various portions of the work;
  • Prepares reports of work done and materials used;
  • Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures;
  • Ensures work performed conforms to City Codes, and other technical standards; travels to a variety of indoor and outdoor locations to participate in or inspect work, which may include traversing uneven terrain, climbing ladders, using lifts, navigating tunnels, entering basements, and viewing roof tops;
  • Ensures compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations;
  • Utilizes computer software to generate reports, retrieve data, and complete and review work orders and time sheets;
  • May drive a light truck to and from job site;
  • May respond to public inquires.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience in building maintenance or repair work with the City of Columbus or comparable experience. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a high school diploma.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license.

The exam is expected to be administered in September 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidates name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
