Description

Performs intermediate technical work inspecting building construction for compliance with State and local building codes and ordinances, reviewing and issuing permits, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Building Inspector.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs field inspections and reinspections of residential construction and existing structures for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes.
  • Collects and records all engineer reports.
  • Ensures buildings are in compliance with zoning regulations.
  • Ensures job sites are in compliance with erosion control regulations.
  • Responds to questions from engineers and contractors.
  • Reviews plans and ensures buildings match plans.
  • Performs daily inspections; plans inspection route.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and extensive experience in building inspections, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of engineering records and reports; thorough knowledge of construction equipment, tablets, and specific inspections systems; thorough knowledge of standard office and job specific software; general knowledge of inspection records; skill in using assigned equipment; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions or decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to manage time; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Supplemental Information

Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.

Certification as a qualified building inspector by the State of North Carolina.

Certification Ladder: This position is eligible for participation in the Certification Ladder Program. Each certification in an eligible trade area (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing) outside of the primary work responsibility shall result in a 3% increase in pay, so long as the program is in effect. Please note that this program is at the discretion of the Elected Body during the Annual Budget process. Starting salary can be adjusted based on the number of additional certifications held.
