The mission of Facilities Management is to provide a quality learning, research, and living environment for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and the community by planning, building, operating, and maintaining the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Primary Purpose of Position
Building Envelope Architect/Engineerr serves as the University's primary technical authority for the total physical building boundary and its critical internal systems. This position evaluates design documents, participates in project planning, and oversees the commissioning of building enclosures (roofs, walls, glazing), interior architectural finishes (flooring, paint, ceilings), and vertical transportation systems (elevators).
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Building Envelope Architect/Engineer serves as the University's primary technical authority on the physical integrity and performance of the campus built environment. Reporting to the Director of Asset Management, the role is responsible for governing University standards for the building enclosure (roofs, walls, glazing), interior finishes, and vertical transportation systems.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the candidate with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform complex building science analysis and forensic investigations. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Primary Expertise: Advanced knowledge of building science, including thermodynamics, moisture dynamics, and airflow management specifically for building envelopes in humid subtropical climates.
Maintenance Integration: Experience bridging the "Design-to-Ops" gap, specifically coordinating with skilled trades (Paint, Flooring, Carpentry, and Elevators) to ensure long-term maintainability.
Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in forensic engineering for water intrusion, air barrier failures, and flooring substrate issues.
Code Mastery: Deep familiarity with the North Carolina International Building Code (NC IBC), NC Energy Conservation Code, and ASME A17.1 (Safety Code for Elevators).
Communication: Ability to negotiate technical material selections with external design firms to protect university lifecycle interests.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA).
Industry Specifics: Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP), Registered Roof Observer (RRO), or Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP).
Special Notes to Applicants
This position is a "bridge" role. Success requires the ability to transition seamlessly from high-level design meetings with external architects to the mechanical rooms and rooftops with our skilled trade technicians. We are looking for a technical authority who is equally comfortable reviewing blue-prints as they are conducting site-walks with our Envelope, Interiors, and Elevator shops.
