Job Description and Functions

The Wyoming Life Resource Center (WLRC) is located in Lander, Wyoming, and is looking for a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our team as a Buildings and Grounds Specialist. In this role, you will be responsible for keeping the grounds, streets, and sidewalks of WLRC clean and safe. The main duties of this job involve physical work outdoors and operating various types of equipment.

Essential Functions

The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Maintain all lawns, green spaces, sidewalks, and roads at the WLRC campus.
  • Operate heavy equipment safely, including tractors, backhoes, bulldozers, trenchers, mowers, bucket trucks, and dump trucks.
  • Use power tools and hand tools like chain saws and sweepers.
  • Care for the lawns (mow, water, fertilize, and remove weeds).
  • Plant, prune, and remove trees and perform general landscaping tasks.
  • Handle and apply chemicals for weeds and pests safely (pesticides/herbicides).
  • Perform year-round maintenance, including snow removal in the winter.
  • Repair and maintain campus infrastructure, such as streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and fencing.
  • Perform basic construction work, including concrete work, carpentry, and plumbing.
  • Install and fix sprinkler (irrigation) systems.
  • Clean and maintain the irrigation ditch system, monitor water flow, and repair headgates.
  • Prepare graves for interments and maintain the cemetery grounds and headstones.
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting other operations departments.

Qualifications

  • Agency Requirements:
  • Valid drivers license is required.
  • Knowledge:
  • Experience in landscaping and grounds upkeep, especially using heavy equipment (backhoes, tractors, mowers, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and safely operate all required heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and agency procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own tasks.
  • Strong communication skills, both speaking and writing.
  • Ability to work professionally around WLRC residents, including those who may have challenging behaviors.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education & Experience Substitution: 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Buildings and Grounds) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Buildings and Grounds Assistant.
  • Education: Associates Degree, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None Necessary Special Requirements.

Physical Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: This role requires regular lifting, moving heavy items, twisting, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work Environment: You must be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, climb ladders, and work on a variety of surfaces.
  • Safety: You may be exposed to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, chemicals, and biohazards. You must follow all safety protocols and have the ability to work with and around WLRC residents, including those who may display challenging behaviors.

Notes

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • Background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the FBI for every successful applicant.
  • The Wyoming Life Resource Center participates in E-Verify. We will provide the Social Security Administration, and if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security, with information from each new employees Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be conducted on safety-sensitive positions. Drug testing will be conducted on any position if reasonable suspicion exists.
