Performs a variety of manual tasks related to the maintenance of Lake Bryan grounds, buildings, and equipment; assists with maintenance at other Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) facilities as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Works independently to track conditions of the park/facility areas and prioritizes most important work to be accomplished.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the planting and maintenance of landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; waters, mows, weeds, trims, and fertilizes lawns; applies fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides as needed.
  • Inspects and repairs playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecue-pits, and other facility related equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance on BTU facilities and recreation areas such as painting, plumbing, and carpentry work.
  • Coordinates and oversees contractor projects and repairs.
  • Operates and maintains landscaping and maintenance equipment including vehicles, tractor, turf mowers, blowers, weed eaters, sprayers, and power tools.
  • Picks up trash and maintains presentable appearance at Lake Bryan and BTU facilities.
  • Clears debris or leaves by raking or using power blowers to clear walkways, paths, and facilities.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Responds regularly and promptly to work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18.
  • High School Diploma/GED and/or work experience performing landscaping, grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, or similar job responsibilities is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles and practices of Facility/Parks maintenance and repair.
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in Facility/Parks maintenance.
  • Basic methods and techniques of landscaping, plumbing, carpentry, and basic electrical work.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Conduct routine inspections of BTU equipment and facilities; perform maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Learn to apply herbicide and pesticide.
  • Maintain landscaped areas.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Be alert and aware of work hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing incidents.
  • Interpret and abide by City and department administrative directives, policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and to communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.

Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements

Texas Class C driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system.

Equipment may include but is not limited to: shovels, rakes, hand and power tools, mowers, weed eaters, edgers, leaf blowers, trimmers, saws, sprayers, tractors, trucks, trailers, and other assorted landscape/grounds equipment.
