    Position Overview

    A growing engineering team is seeking an experienced Bridge Project Manager to lead bridge and transportation structure projects from preliminary design through construction. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of project delivery while also helping develop and mentor bridge engineering professionals.

    The ideal candidate combines strong structural engineering expertise with proven project management, client communication, and team leadership capabilities.

    Key Responsibilities

    Project Management & Engineering

    • Lead bridge and structural engineering projects through all phases of design and construction.
    • Establish and manage project scope, schedules, budgets, resources, and deliverables.
    • Provide technical direction on bridge and transportation structure projects.
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams and technical resources.
    • Develop project management and quality management plans.
    • Oversee preparation of construction plans and related technical submittals.
    • Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks.
    • Manage subconsultants and coordinate their project responsibilities.
    • Monitor project progress, financial performance, and overall delivery.
    • Prepare progress reports, review invoices, and address project issues.
    • Develop additional work requests and task proposals when project needs change.

    Team Leadership & Development

    • Provide guidance, coaching, and performance feedback to engineering staff.
    • Mentor team members through project reviews, one-on-one discussions, and lessons-learned sessions.
    • Help build and strengthen the bridge engineering team.
    • Support staff development and increasing technical and leadership responsibilities.

    Client Relations & Business Development

    • Maintain strong relationships with clients and understand their project expectations.
    • Communicate project status, risks, updates, and issues to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Lead project status presentations and client-facing meetings.
    • Support proposal preparation, interviews, and business development initiatives.
    • Participate in project financial reviews and planning discussions.

    Work Schedule & Environment

    • Hybrid schedule: 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.
    • Remote workdays are Wednesday and Friday.
    • Approximately 95% of work is performed in a professional office environment.
    • Occasional field assignments may involve outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
    • Some lifting of materials or equipment up to 25 pounds may occasionally be required.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering focus from an ABET-accredited program.
    • 10+ years of bridge and structural design experience.
    • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
    • Virginia PE license preferred; candidates licensed in another state must be able to obtain Virginia licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
    • Experience providing structural engineering expertise from preliminary design through construction.
    • Demonstrated experience managing bridge or structural design projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and delivery.
    • Project management experience or demonstrated progression into project management responsibilities.
    • Strong client-facing communication and presentation skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering focus.
    • Experience working with VDOT and Virginia localities or agencies.
    • Experience with multiple project delivery methods, including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, or P3.
    • Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.
    • Experience with staff development, mentoring, and performance management.
    • Experience with proposal development and client relationship management.
