A middle school boys' basketball assistant coach in a Tennessee public school system is responsible for supporting the head coach in managing the basketball program, developing player skills, and maintaining athletic compliance with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA).
Public school districts hire both full-time school teachers (faculty coaches) and qualified community members (non-faculty coaches) for this athletic support role.
 
Core Job Responsibilities
  • Instruction & Player Development: Teaches fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, passing, shooting, defensive positioning, and team plays during practice sessions.
  • Game-Day Support: Assists the head coach with bench coaching, tracking team statistics, managing substitutions, and monitoring player conduct during games.
  • Practice Execution: Runs specific drills, manages practice stations, and helps supervise the locker room before and after team sessions.
  • Academic & Eligibility Monitoring: Helps track student-athlete grades and behavior to ensure all players maintain the required academic standing to play.
  • Safety & Supervision: Supervises student-athletes during bus travel to away games, in the gymnasium, and until parents arrive for pickup after events.
  • Equipment Management: Coordinates the setup and breakdown of gym equipment, clock operation for practices, and the inventory of team uniforms and basketballs.

 

Mandatory Qualifications & Certifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Background Clearance: Must clear a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) fingerprint background check and a Department of Children's Services (DCS) registry check.
  • Medical Training: Active certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • State-Mandated Safety Courses: Annual completion of mandated health courses covering Concussions in Sports, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and Heat Illness Prevention.
  • Classification Specifics:
    • Faculty Coaches: Must be a certified teacher within the public school system.
    • Non-Faculty Coaches: Must complete the mandatory Fundamentals of Coaching course and the specific Health and Safety course before working with students
Employment Type & Compensation
  • Schedule: A seasonal, part-time position concentrated heavily in the late fall and winter months. Requires daily after-school practice times and weeknight game travel.
  • Compensation: Faculty members receive an athletic supplemental stipend added to their standard teaching contract. Non-faculty assistant coaches receive a flat, single-season stipend determined by the local board of education's athletic pay scale.
