The City of Norfolks Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Maintenance Workers I to support the construction of the St. Paul's Blue-Greenway. This position is to perform all aspects of bed and turf maintenance. This includes chemical spraying, mulching, hedge and shrub trimming, tree pruning, mowing, weed trimming and edging. Skills using tools typically found in ground maintenance operations are desired. These include push mowers, string trimmers, blowers, chain saws, hand pruners, shovels, rakes, brooms, etc. and operating a variety of vehicles.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $41,600
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Education/Experience
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
6 months experience in greenhouse or landscaping operations, preferred
Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):
Valid Virginia Driver's License
Registered Technician License for Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicators is required with 6 months of employment
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Work hours may change seasonally, additional on-call schedule
Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
