Description

Biomedical Equipment Technician I The Technician I is the entry level in the Technician career path, designed for someone beginning their career in the diagnostic imaging industry. Working under close supervision and following established procedures, the Technician I performs basic, well-defined technical tasks - including Level 1 equipment harvesting, basic component testing, and assisting with repairs and installations - while building foundational knowledge of imaging systems.This position specializes in mammography systems, including full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) platforms from Hologic, GE, Siemens, and Fujifilm. Mammography carries requirements that set it apart from other modalities: its digital detectors are among the highest-value and most environmentally sensitive components in diagnostic imaging, its patient-contact surfaces require specific handling and decontamination, and the equipment our customers receive must support their FDA MQSA accreditation. Documentation accuracy and careful physical handling are therefore weighted more heavily in this role than in general imaging repair.At this level, the focus is on learning the industry, developing core technical skills, and consistently applying documented processes and safety standards. Work is reviewed regularly, and tasks outside the defined scope are escalated to higher-level technicians or the Modality Lead. The Technician I builds the foundation for advancement to Technician II.Key ResponsibilitiesInclude but are not limited to:Perform basic, well-defined technical tasks under close supervision and established procedures.Assist with Level 1 equipment harvesting and disassembly of mammography systems, including gantry/C-arm assemblies, compression mechanisms, collimator and filter assemblies, buckys and grids, and acquisition workstations.Follow documented handling, packaging, and environmental controls when removing, transporting, and storing digital detectors - including ESD precautions, orientation and shock/tilt requirements, and temperature and humidity limits.Conduct basic parts testing using approved tools, equipment, and documented processes - including continuity and resistance checks, power supply verification, cable and harness testing, motor and encoder function checks, and bench power-up of subassemblies.Assist senior technicians with component-level repairs and system installation activities, including x-ray tube and filter wheel assemblies, compression paddle and force-sensor assemblies, AEC components, and gantry drive and rotation hardware.Capture and record complete system identity on intake and harvest: manufacturer, model, serial number, part and revision numbers, software and firmware versions, configuration, and installed options.Clean and decontaminate patient-contact surfaces - compression paddles, face shields, patient shields, and biopsy attachments - following documented procedures before handling, testing, or storage.Follow service manuals, schematics, and work instructions to ensure accuracy and consistency.Accurately document all work performed, including test results and observations.Learn and apply core technical concepts, tools, and safety practices.Maintain tools, test equipment, and a clean, organized, and safe work environment.Recognize tasks or issues outside the defined scope and escalate to senior technicians or the Modality Lead.Create, review, and update work instructions and other quality related documents as well as following all processes to ensure ISO 13485 compliance.Systems and Components SupportedThe Technician I will be trained on and progressively exposed to:Platforms: Hologic (Lorad, Selenia, Selenia Dimensions, 3Dimensions, Affirm), GE (Senographe DS, Essential, Pristina), Siemens (Mammomat Inspiration, Revelation), Fujifilm (Aspire Cristalle, Amulet Innovality).Detectors: Direct-conversion amorphous selenium (a-Se) and indirect-conversion CsI/a-Si flat panel detectors, including bias and power requirements, environmental limits, and handling and packaging standards.X-ray chain: Mammographic x-ray tubes (molybdenum, rhodium, and tungsten targets; small-format focal spots; beryllium windows), filter wheel assemblies, collimators, generators, and high-voltage components.Mechanical systems: Isocentric C-arm rotation and tilt drives, counterbalanced gantry assemblies, compression motor and force-sensing systems, paddle sets (standard, spot, implant/displacement, and biopsy), and tomosynthesis tube-sweep mechanisms.Imaging and control: Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) sensors, buckys and grids, acquisition workstations, control panels, and system cabling and power distribution.Job RequirementsEducation and ExperienceAssociate degree in Biomedical Electronics, Electronics, or a related technical field preferred.0–2 years of diagnostic imaging service or in-house technical experience; entry-level candidates encouraged to apply.Military electronics, biomedical equipment, or comparable technical training accepted in place of a degree. SkillBridge and transitioning service members welcome.No prior mammography experience required. Modality-specific training is provided.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesFoundational knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, and mechanical assemblies.Basic understanding of diagnostic imaging systems and parts (e.g., Mammography, MRI, CT, X-ray, Ultrasound).Ability to follow detailed instructions, procedures, and checklists accurately.Developing troubleshooting skills for routine, well-defined system and component issues.Ability to work effectively under close supervision while building independence.Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and openness to coaching and feedback.Demonstrated care and deliberateness when handling high-value, fragile, or environmentally sensitive components.Clear communication skills to report findings and collaborate with team members.Ability to learn and apply new technical concepts and procedures quickly.Ability to follow safety, quality, and operational standards consistently.Equipment & Technology UsageElectrical/Electronic Lab Equipment: Multi-meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and network analyzers for diagnosing and testing electrical components.3D Printing Equipment: FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) type 3D printer for prototyping and component fabrication.Ladders, Hoists, and Slings: Used for accessing high-storage areas and handling large medical equipment, including counterbalanced mammography gantries.Hand Trucks: Regular use for moving materials and supplies.General Hand/Power Tools: Includes drills, wrenches, soldering irons, and other repair/assembly tools.Computer & Technology: Use of CAD software, inventory management systems, and diagnostic tools for testing and maintenance. Proficient in basic Microsoft Suite programs. ERP System knowledge is a plus.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): May be required to wear safety gloves, helmets, composite-toe boots, and safety glasses.ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Protection: Wrist straps, mats, and anti-static workstations for handling sensitive electronic components, including digital detectors.Physical Job RequirementsSitting & Standing: May require prolonged sitting for administrative tasks and standing for operational duties.Walking: Frequent movement within the facility, warehouse, or production area to oversee operations.Lifting/Carrying: Occasionally required to lift or carry materials, tools, or equipment (typically 25–50 lbs; heavier lifting may be necessary for some roles). Team lifts and mechanical assistance are required for gantry and tube assemblies.Bending, Stooping & Kneeling: May be needed for inspecting equipment, retrieving items, or troubleshooting issues.Reaching & Handling: Frequent use of hands and arms to operate machinery, handle paperwork, or work with tools. Requires fine motor control and steady handling of small fasteners, connectors, and fragile assemblies.Vision: Ability to read digital screens, printed reports, and inspect products or machinery for quality control. Requires close visual inspection of detector surfaces, boards, and connectors for damage.Hearing & Speaking: Clear communication with team members, supervisors, and external vendors in person, via phone, or video conferencing.Work Environment / Exposure to Environmental ConditionsTemperature & Climate Conditions: Office areas are typically climate-controlled. Warehouses may have fluctuating temperatures. Detector storage and staging areas are environmentally controlled and must be maintained within documented limits.Compliance & Regulations: Must follow OSHA, industry safety guidelines, and company policies.Potential Exposure to Radiation Risks: Minimal exposure to X-ray machines and MRI systems, primarily in service, repair, and training roles. Personnel dosimetry monitoring is provided where required.Risk of Electrical Shock: Exposure when working near or handling medical imaging systems and other medical devices with high voltage, including generator and high-voltage tank assemblies.Work Near Moving Mechanical Parts: Exposure to medical imaging systems and other healthcare machinery, including counterbalanced C-arm assemblies and powered compression mechanisms that retain stored mechanical energy.Occasional Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens: Minimal exposure to parts that may have been contaminated; proper decontamination procedures are followed. Mammography systems include direct patient-contact surfaces that must be decontaminated on receipt before handling.Chemical & Hazardous Material Handling: Possible exposure to sterilizing agents, medical cleaning solutions, and disinfectants.
