Some of duties of the position include, but are not limited to;

  • Manages imaging systems and databases.
  • Configures and supports interfaces on imaging equipment and clinical systems.
  • Coordinates and implements cybersecurity measures and disaster recovery plans.
  • Performs manufacturer-level maintenance on imaging systems.
  • Manages the planning, acquisition, and installation of imaging equipment.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on assigned committees, projects, and workgroups.
  • Manages the lifecycle of medical equipment and clinical systems.
  • Troubleshoots medical equipment and clinical systems using a variety of technical data and completes corrective action.
  • Performs incoming inspections and planned maintenance on medical equipment and clinical systems.
  • Documents all work in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Responds to and remediates hazard alerts, recall notifications, and incidents concerning medical equipment and clinical systems. Documents all actions in the appropriate system.
  • Monitors system backups, ensures network connectivity, mitigates cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and maintains clinical systems.
  • Utilizes test equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
  • Manages projects involving medical equipment and clinical systems.
  • Provides customer support to staff, evaluates issues and needs, responds with solutions, and keeps customers abreast of status.
  • Educates staff on the safe operation and user-level maintenance of medical equipment and clinical systems.
  • May serve as a Contracting Officers Representative (COR) and/or purchase card holder.
  • Develops documentation to purchase commodities and/or vendor services. Manages, monitors, and evaluates contractor performance and addresses issues or deficiencies.
  • Complies with applicable standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to expand professional knowledge and enhance technical skillsets.
  • Maintains and enhances knowledge in technological advancements through professional development and technical training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: The primary tour of duty will be M-F 8:30am to 5pm. However, the selectee may also be required to travel to different locations to assist with imaging equipment, which may be on-call for certain periods of time. (May be required to work on Holidays, weekends, and after hours)

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Education, Experience, or Certification-(Documentation Submitted):
  • Associates or higher degree in the biomedical technology or biomedical engineering field; OR
  • Associates or higher degree in electronics, a field of information technology, or engineering (other than biomedical engineering) AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Completion of the Department of Defense (DOD) biomedical equipment technician training program; OR
  • Completion of a DOD training program in repair and maintenance of electronic systems or information technology AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Completion of a biomedical engineering technician or Healthcare

Technology Management (HTM) certificate program that included an internship or apprenticeship; OR

  • Completion of biomedical engineering technician or HTM certificate program that did not include an internship AND 1 year of creditable experience; OR
  • Hold or having ever held certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM). Continuous maintenance of certification is

not required throughout VHA employment.

  • Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. program by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, candidates must meet the following grade-determining criteria for placement at grade level specified.

Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (Imaging), GS-12-(SF-50 Submitted if Applicable):

  • Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • Knowledge of imaging principles including techniques, technologies, radiological practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of HL7 and DICOM standards.
  • Skill in applying standards for safe operation of medical equipment and clinical systems including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nuclear Radiation Commission (NRC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Joint Commission (TJC), and the American College of Radiology (ACR).
  • Ability to resolve complex failures on imaging equipment and clinical systems.
  • Ability to perform advanced testing to troubleshoot imaging equipment and clinical system interfaces.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, and maintain intense concentration for long periods of time under adverse conditions, such as troubleshooting, repairing and/or calibrating life-saving equipment while it is monitoring and/or supporting the life of a patient. Heavy lifting (over 40 lbs.) can be accomplished by getting assistance when needed. Certain electronic component repairs require adequate eyesight and dexterity.

Officially established in October 2006, the Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS) serves more than 118,000 Veterans in Central Florida and includes a 120-bed Community Living Center, two Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs/Domiciliaries (60-beds located at the Lake Nona Campus and 58-beds at the Lake Baldwin Campus), one Health Care Center in Viera, two large multi-specialty Satellite Outpatient Clinics in Orlando (Lake Baldwin campus) and Daytona Beach, and five Community-Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Deltona, Palm Bay and Tavares. The Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona is open for outpatient, inpatient and emergency services. As VAs newest state-of-the-art health care facility, Orlandos 65-acre medical campus encompasses 134 acute inpatient beds, providing complex Medical/Surgical/Mental Health specialty care, advanced diagnostic services, and a large multispecialty outpatient clinic.
