    Department Information

    The Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is committed to conducting outstanding basic, clinical and translational research that promotes advanced computation and informatics approaches to increase the overall understanding of normal and disease-associated biological processes, drug development and therapeutic responses. The center stimulates and facilitates collaboration among computational scientists, laboratory and clinical investigators, and other health care researchers while simultaneously educating the next generation of bioinformaticians through coursework and direct participation in research activities.

    Job Summary

    Department Specific Responsibilities

    • Performs preprocessing and quality control of high-throughput next generation sequencing data.
    • Executes established bioinformatics pipelines for data alignment, quantification, and variant or feature detection.
    • Implements and maintains bioinformatics pipelines.
    • Improves and creates new analysis pipelines for new data types and projects.
    • Generates figures, tables, and summaries of analytical results to support manuscripts, presentations, and reports.
    • Organizes, documents, and maintains research datasets in accordance with data management and reproducibility standards.
    • Assists with data sharing and preparation of datasets for publication or collaborative use.
    • Communicates with researchers to explain and interpret analysis results.

    General Responsibilities

    • Employs a variety of computational sequence analysis (mathematical and computing) tools to model and analyze biological data in support of researchers.
    • Accesses, extracts and prepares data for analysis, including combining data run on multiple platforms as well as externally generated data in support of meta-analyses.
    • Installs, configures, customizes, and supports analytical software for data on research clusters.
    • Performs performance and reliability assessments to ensure systems are performing to maximum productivity and scientific validity.
    • Documents consultation, analysis, and quality control efforts.
    • Researches and stays up-to-date on emerging technologies/tools, trends, standards, and best practices related to bioinformatics.

    Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

    EDUCATION

    Required

    • Bachelors degree (preferably in computer science, bioinformatics, biology, or related field.)

    Preferred

    • Masters degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biology, or related field.

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    Preferred

    • Some experience in research technology support, large biological data analysis, or related experience.
    • 1 year experience in single-cell data analysis and analyzing Oxford Nanopore long-read data.

    Preferred

    • Demonstrable experience/skill with single cell data analysis.
    • Familiarity with widely used tools such as Seurat, Scanpy.
    • Demonstrable experience/skill with long-read data analysis.
    • Knowledge of Linux shell commands.

    Working Conditions / Demands

    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
