Overview:

Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the behavioral health patient safety attendant will provide care to a patient by sitting with and diligently watching the patient while meeting the established criteria in accordance with established methods and procedures of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain continuous visual observation of assigned patients to ensure a safe and secure environment at all times.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient behavior, mental status, condition, or activities to the Registered Nurse (RN) immediately.
  • Adhere to all patient safety protocols, including Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Monitoring procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment, reporting maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Follow infection prevention and control practices, including universal precautions.
  • Accurately document patient observations and activities on required monitoring records and observation logs.
  • Provide clear and accurate shift-to-shift reports, communicating patient status, observations, and changes in care plans.
  • Use verbal redirection and approved de-escalation techniques to support patient safety and manage challenging behaviors.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while interacting with patients.
  • Provide patients with routine explanations regarding care and activities while refraining from counseling or offering personal opinions.
  • Immediately notify nursing staff when patient assistance or intervention is required.
  • Escort patients to diagnostic tests, procedures, therapeutic activities, and other scheduled appointments as needed.
  • Demonstrate focused attention on patient observation duties, minimizing distractions and maintaining vigilance throughout the shift.
  • Uphold organizational values and standards of professionalism, compassion, respect, and patient-centered care.
  • Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members to support quality patient care.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within 6 months of hire date. 
  • Must read the BBMC Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Protocols and successfully complete the accompanying test. CPI certified.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset Basic Computer skills.
