Description

Job Title: Battery Development Technician

The Battery Development Technician supports advanced battery cell manufacturing and testing in a controlled laboratory and cleanroom environment. This role focuses on equipment setup and operation, chemical mixing, data collection, and continuous process improvement to ensure safe, reliable, and high-quality battery development. The technician works closely with engineering and cross-shift teams to execute experiments, maintain equipment, and enhance processes that enable cutting-edge battery technology.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, monitor, and shut down laboratory and manufacturing equipment used in battery cell development, ensuring reliable and consistent functionality.
  • Perform thorough equipment cleaning, process checks, and routine inspections to maintain stable and repeatable operations.
  • Work consistently in a controlled cleanroom environment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) and following all contamination control procedures.
  • Mix chemicals, including liquids, powders, and gases, according to specified recipes and procedures to support battery electrode and cell production.
  • Perform scheduled equipment maintenance and required cleaning to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance.
  • Observe equipment functionality during operation and troubleshoot issues as they arise, escalating concerns when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including process parameters, test data, and observations, and analyze collected data to report results.
  • Recommend revisions to laboratory and manufacturing processes based on observations, data analysis, and collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Document best practices in battery cell manufacturing processes through standardized work instructions and job instruction training materials.
  • Use data collection and analysis to drive informed process improvements and implement corrective actions when deviations or issues occur.
  • Identify and eliminate operational waste by applying Lean manufacturing tools and principles to daily activities.
  • Execute structured problem-solving techniques to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in the lab and cleanroom environment.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, safety practices, and inventory of supplies to support a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
  • Coordinate and exchange findings, observations, and improvement ideas with engineering personnel and other stakeholders outside the immediate work group.
  • Properly handle and dispose of material waste in accordance with established procedures and environmental guidelines.
  • Actively participate in team and group business plan deployment meetings, contributing to planning, progress updates, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate test, build, and preventive maintenance activities with stakeholders and support teams to ensure on-time completion and minimal disruption to operations.
  • Evaluate incoming work requests to confirm that necessary equipment, hardware, and resources are available to support planned activities.
  • Perform hands-on tasks related to electrode processing, such as cutting, handling, and preparation of components, as well as working with coating equipment and related tools.
  • Collaborate and communicate with technicians across multiple shifts to ensure effective cross-shift carryover, consistent processes, and continuity of work.

Essential Skills

  • Two-year associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory, testing, manufacturing, or cleanroom environment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, chemical, and/or electrical systems and concepts.
  • Experience operating and maintaining manufacturing or laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, process documentation, and technical work instructions.
  • Proficiency with computer applications used in manufacturing and laboratory environments, including data collection, documentation, and reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address moderately complex technical issues.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to document work, share findings, and collaborate with team members and engineering staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and function effectively within a team in a collaborative, inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work comfortably around chemicals and to follow safe handling procedures.
  • Basic hands-on skills with tools and equipment, including the ability to operate and handle basic mechanical tools.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work any shift as operational needs require.
  • Comfort with switching tasks and adapting to changing priorities in a dynamic laboratory and manufacturing setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a laboratory and cleanroom environment focused on advanced battery cell innovation and development. Technicians work with specialized equipment for coating, electrode processing, cutting, and cell assembly, as well as laboratory instruments for testing and data collection. The team operates across multiple shifts, with approximately nine technicians on third shift, seven to eight on second shift, and nearly thirty on first shift, creating a collaborative, cross-shift environment with frequent interaction with engineering and maintenance teams. Work requires consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to cleanroom protocols, as well as strict attention to safety, housekeeping, and proper chemical handling and disposal. The schedule may involve any shift based on operational needs, and the work is entirely on-site in the lab and cleanroom setting. This is a Contract position based out of Warren, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
