Position Summary Provides high-quality customer service and professionalism to both customers and Café team members at Tacoma Community College campus. This position provides customers with prompt and warm service, quality beverages and products, is a reliable support to the team, and maintains a clean and comfortable food services environment.

Essential Functions Regularly prepares a variety of espresso drinks and non-espresso beverages using equipment such as coffee grinders, brewers; espresso machines, blenders, etc. Follows standard recipes or customized recipes for customers, including recipe changes such as temperature, quantity of ingredients or substituted ingredients. Operates a POS cash register and handles various types of money including cash, student pay cards, and credit cards. Restocks the café with necessary supplies including milk, ice, syrups, cups, and other items based on the needs of the business. Maintains a clean and organized workspace including sanitizing all utensils, equipment, mopping, and sweeping per shift. If applicable, monitors perishable and non-perishable inventory numbers and reports café needs to the lead barista. Performs café opening and closing procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate, or equivalent
  • or current Running Start student Excellent customer service skills by:
  • Welcoming and helpful attitude toward guests and other team members
  • Work well both independently and with a team
  • Resolve guest questions with care

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous food, beverage, or grocery experience
  • Experience working as a barista.

Conditions of Employment Successful completion of a criminal history background check. Ability to move and carry items up to 30 pounds. Must maintain state health standards and have a current Food Handlers Permit once hired.

The Successful Candidate must Demonstrate

  • Knowledge of computerized accounting and point-of-sale systems.

  • Actively participate as a member of the bookstore team to move the department towards the completion of shared departmental and college goals.
  • Excellent customer service skills; including establishing, building, and maintaining internal/external customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to provide empathetic and timely service to students, faculty, staff, and community members in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to communicate and relate well with diverse populations, students, faculty, staff and the general public in a friendly, courteous, respectful and professional manner with an appreciation of diversity and the benefits of a commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity in the workplace.
  • Ability to promote and maintain a healthy and positive work environment with collegial and cooperative work relationships.
  • Ability to provide clear and ethical principles to decision making and use judgment and discretion in sensitive matters.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, multi-task, and engage in critical self-reflection and growth.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of the Bookstore team.
  • Ability to represent the college effectively at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Communicates information to the Store Manager, Lead Sales Associate, and lead café barista to ensure that all guest needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Follows all verbal and written operational policies and procedures as directed by the Lead Barista and Director for the Bookstore.

Terms of Employment This part-time hourly position is bound by the WAC 357-04-045 provisions above. This requires a flexible schedule to accommodate event coordination needs, including evenings and weekends. The pay rate is $18 per hour. Work location is all property owned and operated by Tacoma Community College including Tacoma Campus and Gig Harbor Campus. Report on time to work in Building 12 at Tacoma campus at your assigned time.
